Otoplasty ('Oto' being the latin word for 'ear') is cosmetic procedure designed to reshape or reposition the pinna (the external part of the human ear). This is why it is also sometimes referred to as Pinnplasty.
Otoplasty may involve removing skin from behind the ears and reshaping the main structural component of the ear - the cartilage. By impacting the flexibility of the cartilage behind the ear, surgeons are able to loosen or tauten the skin which alters the position and angle that the ear sits against the head. Once the desired look has been achieved, ears are then stitched into their new position, concealing incision marks in the crease behind the ear.
For other concerns such as deformed or stretched lobes, patients should instead consider the treatment known as Earlobe Repair. This involves cutting away excess tissue or exisiting damage sustained from piercings and stretchers before closing the wounds with fine, subtle stitching.
Otoplasty will reduce the size of large or protruding ears, correct those that are asymmetrical or perhaps decrease the ear's visibility from certain angles.
Having said this, we often find that these physical changes are secondary to the astonishing impact that treatment has on a person's self-confidence and overall peace of mind.
Otoplasty is permanent and patients can reap the benefits of their ear pinning or reshaping for the rest of their lives.
Some patients do, however, chose to have revisions a little further down the line, but this is rare.
This generally depends on the individual needs of the patient, however on the whole, operations typically last between one and three hours. Some more extensive Otoplasties may require general anaesthetic and therefore can take a little longer, however most are performed under local anaesthesia and are relatively swift.
Often, people note feeling a slightly achy sensation while recovering from Otoplasty. This is sometimes accompanied by some itching, swelling and tenderness. Side effects might also include any associated with general anaesthesia (if your particular procedure has called for it).
There is also a small chance that ear cartilage may shift marginally over time, although surgically this is catered for with something known as overcorrection. This is where the position of the ears appears slightly flatter against the head in order to calculate for the eventual shift.
Tenderness is likely to be present for up to 2 weeks, and patients are required to wear a bandage or headband for the first week or so to allow the ears to heal. Most daily activities can be resumed after day 2, although you should refrain from strenuous activity for around 2 weeks.
For best results - and a comfortable night's sleep - we also recommend that you continue to wear your headband at night for 4-6 weeks, as well as during all contact or team sports, as a precaution.
You can usually return to more sedentary, office jobs after 2-3 days of surgery (unless instructed otherwise) if you feel comfortable to do so. Any roles which are slightly more rigorous may require up to 5 days respite.
