Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy

For treating thread veins in the legs.

Thread veins in the legs is a common problem that, although harmless, often causes distress as the sufferer can feel self-conscious particularly when the veins appear on an exposed area of the legs. They appear when small clusters of red veins form just beneath the surface of the skin.

There’s no need to suffer with this embarrassing condition as Sclerotherapy is a safe, effective and painless procedure to treat the problem, so that when summer comes you will have beautiful vein-free legs you will be proud to show off!

The Procedure

Sclerotherapy removes thread veins through multiple small injections into the affected area of the leg. The chemical solution or sclerosing agent is injected at several points along the leg and being injected with a very tiny needle, the patient feels virtually no pain.

A solution known as Sodium Tetradecyl Sulphate is generally used which irritates the internal lining of the veins and causes blood clotting within the vein. This, along with wearing compression garments after the treatment will cause the vein walls to collapse.

The concentration of Sodium Tetradecyl Sulphate varies depending on the size of the vein being treated – but this will be discussed upon consultation.

Initially the vein looks quite bruised, but over time the body absorbs the veins and the appearance is significantly improved, resulting in more youthful, smoother looking legs.

After the treatment

You will probably need several treatments spaced approximately four to six weeks apart for the most-effective results.

Although the number of treatments required varies, most people will need two to four sessions – each lasting around twenty minutes.

Being a minimally invasive procedure, you can go abut your daily activities after each sessions, although you will be required to wear bandages. You may experience slight itchiness for a couple of days but this is temporary.

The results

You will see a significant improvement in the treated veins although depending on the thickness and extent of the veins being treated, although they may not be removed completely. You might find you need to top up on treatments for better results – we would recommend every 18 months.

However, this is a safe and effective procedure that will visibly reduce the appearance of thread veins and most people who undergo sclerotherapy are delighted with the results.
