MOLE REMOVAL TREATMENTS

A 'mole removal' is fairly self-explicit, referring to cosmetic mole removal, a procedure which endeavours to remove the appearance of moles on the skin. Most moles are simply caused by harmless overgrowth of the pigment cells - known as melanocytes, or melanocytic naevi - and through cosmetic treatments, this pigment can be minimised or removed entirely. A laser mole removal (or mole removal surgery) surgical procedure is extremely common and makes light work of eradicating a skin complaint that many feel self-conscious of with a little local anaesthetic and a quick shave excision or laser mole removal surgery.

Lesley Says

“Most moles can make patients feel very self-conscious. It's really quick, safe and simple procedure to remove moles and get them taken care of, though. With a little local anaesthetic and a specialist doctor you can be in and out of the clinic within half an hour.”

Dr Khan Says

“Our concern is always both medical and cosmetic when it comes to mole removal in London. First we will assess the suspicious mole, and then we will determine the best options for safe, scar-free cosmetic mole removal skin treatments.”

Moles tend to be most common in areas that the skin cells are subject to lots of sun exposure, i.e. the face, arms, legs, decolletage and torso. They are very common, often developing of their own accord and are most likely to appear before the age of 30, meaning that most people will have anywhere between 10-40 moles (compound nevi) upon reaching adulthood.

Having lots of moles does, however, indicate a predisposition to skin cancer - known as melanoma. Malignant melanoma develops from mutations in the melanocytes that make up moles, which is why it is important to closely monitor them for changes in your colour, height, size or shape of suspicious moles, as this can be an indication of melanoma.

Mole Removal FAQs

The answer to some of the most common questions you may have

It's only natural to have questions if you are considering pursuing a treatment for your skin lesions for the first time, and it's important to us that you feel confident and comfortable at every stage of your journey. To help you find the answers you need, here are a few of the more common mole removal quibbles that we find our clients frequently ask...

Mole removals involve specialist doctor either breaking down the discoloured pigment in the skin (using cosmetic lasers or radiofrequency electrodes) or excising the the mole from its core - a shave excision. There are 3 routes to mole removal offered at Harley Street Skin, and these are: cosmetic laser treatment, radio frequency and traditional surgical shave excision (the scalpel method).

The type of method necessary for removing your mole with depend entirely on the shape, size and variety of the original mole itself, however all removal methods are a practically pain-free method for removing moles, and are undertaken using local anaesthetic.

Whilst moles are entirely natural, large numbers of raised moles (25 or more) indicate susceptibility to melanoma - a malignant skin cancer best caught early and treated using surgical excision. Removing moles can be both a preventative move on the grounds of health and an easy remedy to a cosmetic concern, with many considering their 'beauty spots' to instead be a source of contrition.

A mole removal procedure does offer permanent results. Of course with moles being a complaint relative to pigment, there is always the possibility that they may grow back over time if the moles removed were not penetrated deep enough. In this instance, you may need to book a second treatment to repeat the process. However, with thousands of mole removal procedures already under our belt, and perfect execution on the top of our priority list, this is not often the case at Harley Street Skin.

Mole removal is a very straightforward procedure, requiring very little time at all. Appointments will typically take half an hour, although the procedure itself can take as little as 10 minutes - depending on the nature of the mole(s) concerned. Radio frequency in particular is known for its rapid recovery time, too, so many find the whole process suitably speedy.

Depending on the mole removal method, you may experience some redness and soreness for a few days following treatment, and following that, some scabbing and flaking of the surrounding skin, as a new layer forms over the site. This will, however, have healed entirely by the four week mark after skin surgery.

On the whole, the mole removal treatment is relatively pain-free and - provided the site is kept clean as it heals without further treatment - complications are extremely rare. As the electrodes used during radio frequency treatments of mole cells are also self-sterilising whilst in use, the risk of post-procedure infection is very low.

Recovery from the laser mole removal procedure is very straightforward, and many people feel perfectly able to function as normal that very same day once local anaesthesia has waned. The healing process, however, can take anywhere from one to four weeks as the skin regenerates over the wound. During this time, the former surrounding skin area will form a protective layer, eventually flaking to reveal a fresh, flat and mole-free layer beneath. The treated area will continue to fade out to blend with your natural skin tone over the following few weeks.

It is usually possible to return to work immediately following a straightforward mole removal procedure, although special considerations should be made if the treated area is more intimate or may be irritated by strenuous duties. A policeman, for instance, may experience physical contact that could irritate the mole removal site during treatment and affect the healing process, however those in office based roles are unlikely to encounter this kind of issue.

Facial mole removal, and neck and hand mole removal procedures for cosmetic reasons should not hinder your return to work, although those who have a mole removed on the back, chest, legs, torso or groin may very well require a few days to heal before being thrust back into day-to-day activity.

Proper aftercare is crucial post-mole removal. Keep the area clean and dry, washing gently with mild soap and water. Apply antibiotic ointment and cover with a sterile bandage. Avoid strenuous activities and refrain from picking at scabs. Watch for any unusual signs and report them promptly. Follow specific post-procedure instructions, including sun protection. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are essential for monitoring progress and addressing concerns during the recovery period.

After your mole removal surgery, expect some redness, swelling, and mild discomfort around the treated area. A scab may form, and resisting the urge to pick at it is crucial to prevent scarring. Keep the area clean, apply prescribed ointments, and let the scab naturally slough off. Redness may persist for a few weeks but typically fades as the skin heals. Protect the site from sun exposure to prevent hyperpigmentation. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider ensure a smooth recovery, allowing you to confidently embrace the results with patience and avoid minimal scarring.

Mole removal is generally not painful, thanks to the use of local anesthesia during the procedure. While individuals may feel a slight pinch during the local anaesthetic injection (especially with facial mole removal), the actual mole removal procedure is typically painless. Afterward, some mild soreness may occur, but it is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. If you have specific concerns about pain management, it's advisable to discuss them with your healthcare professional.

Attempting to remove a mole at home is strongly discouraged and potentially dangerous due to risks and complications. Mole removal requires precision to avoid infection, scarring, and incomplete removal, which can lead to regrowth or other issues. Home remedies, such as cutting or using over-the-counter products, may cause more harm than good. Moreover, self-diagnosing the nature of a mole is challenging, and attempting removal without professional assessment can delay the identification of potential skin issues. It is always recommended to consult with our consultant dermatologists who follow strict medical protocols for a proper evaluation, can diagnose a cancerous mole as well as s benign mole, and safe offer removal of moles in a controlled and sterile environment.

At A Harley Street Skin Clinic mole removal appointment, we offer advanced and personalized techniques for mole removal to meet the unique needs of our clients. Our skilled consultant dermatologists employ methods such as shave excisions (or surgical excision) and laser therapy, ensuring precision and minimal scarring. Shave removal involves removing the mole's surface layers, while laser therapy utilizes focused light for a non-invasive mole removal treatment. Our experts assess each case individually, recommending the most suitable technique based on factors such as mole size, type, and location to remove moles.

Keeping track of your moles is essential for monitoring changes that may indicate potential health concerns. Establish a routine self-examination by thoroughly inspecting your skin regularly, noting the size, color, shape, and borders moles and skin tags. Utilize photographs to document their appearance and track any alterations over time. Especailly with a protruding mole. Pay close attention to asymmetry, irregular borders, changes in color, diameter, or evolving elevation, as these could be warning signs of abnormal cells. Consider using a body map to systematically record the location of each mole. Regularly revisit these records and consult a healthcare professional promptly if you notice any significant changes or have concerns about a particular mole. Professional skin checks by one of our consultant dermatologists can provide a more thorough examination and should be part of your overall strategy for mole monitoring and skin health.

Whether you can get a mole removed on the NHS (National Health Service) depends on various factors. The NHS typically covers mole removal costs if there are medical reasons, such as concerns about cancerous or pre-cancerous changes, or if the mole causes discomfort or affects daily activities due to the mole's location. Cosmetic reasons, such as wanting a mole removed for aesthetic purposes, are generally not covered by the NHS, and individuals may need to explore private options for a purely cosmetic result. It's essential to consult with our skin specialists who can assess the specific circumstances of the mole removal options and provide guidance on the most suitable course of action, considering both medical and cosmetic procedures.

Occasionally, and of course sadly, moles can be a tell tell sign of skin cancer. Mole testing for potential skin cancer-ous cells involves precise biopsy techniques of a few mole cells, such as shave excisional biopsies. Our expert dermatologists ensure meticulous analysis of small tissue samples to identify any cancerous cells. Early detection of cancerous moles is key, underscoring the significance of regular skin checks and professional evaluations for monitoring and addressing concerns promptly. Once a suspicious mole has been ruled out for cancerous cells then the mole removal safe procedure via surgical excision or laser removal methods is possible.
