Collagen is a protein in the skin which makes up the matrix of skin supports, helping to maintain the skin's youthful shape and plumpness. It works in tandem with Elastin and Hyaluronic acid to cushion the skin, keeping it firm, supple and hydrated.
When injected, Sculptra prompts the body to produce more collagen, 'filling' the space that has been left by dwindling collagen fibres with newly produced collagen.
Sculptra is injected in a pattern formation, then massaged, to evenly refill the areas which appear most gaunt or concave. It will then continue to produce new collagen for up to 6 weeks of treatment, filling out the problem area(s) for up to two whole years.

Sculptra is also a fantastic alternative to filler (and dermal implants) as it is designed to accommodate the natural changes and movements of the face. Sculptra should take no longer than 30 minutes to carry out, allowing an additional 30-60 minutes for the application of an anaesthetic cream.
Gradual improvements of Sculptra will become apparent over the course of the following 6 weeks, typically taking between 8 and 12 weeks for visible improvement.
Slight swelling or puffiness, as well as minor bruising and tenderness around injection sites, are common following Sculptra. These are, however, all short-lived and should subside within 3-5 days of treatment.
Essentially, Sculptra is an injectable - similar to Botox - so with regards to 'recovery', Sculptra calls for next to nothing. Often, there is some lingering swelling and sensitivity, therefore a cold compress can be applied for the first 24-48 hours to ease any inflammation or discomfort.
You are, however, advised to massage the injection sites over the course of the 6 weeks that Sculptra begins to take effect. This prevents the product from gathering into pockets which could compromise the finish. Gentle, routine massage will help to give patients the absolute optimum results.
Sculptra does not require any downtime, and therefore you should be able to return to work immediately after treatment. Having said this, some patients do opt to let any swelling subside for 24 hours before returning to work, although this is purely down to personal choice and there is no medical requirement to do so.
