Semi-Permanent Makeup In London

With over half a million procedures undertaken, you're in safe hands

'Semi-Permanent Makeup' refers to the method of using dense pigment to add corrective colour to the face and body. This pigment may be applied to the skin using either Medical Tattooing (also known as 'Micropigmentation'/'Cosmetic Tattooing') or Temporary Camouflage Makeup.

Semi-Permanent Makeup is incredible for filling in patchy brows, adding definition to the arch of the lips; concealing scar tissue, veins, vitiligo or birthmarks; and even make thinning hair on the scalp appear thicker.

Lesley Says

“We find that Semi-Permanent Makeup is a great solution for busy mums - particularly brow and eyeliner tattooing. They really help the face appear rested and ready-to-go.”

Dr Khan Says

“I think it’s fantastic. Medical Tattooing, in particular, has helped many patients suffering with hair conditions such as premature greying and hair loss.”

Semi-Permanent Makeup Before & Afters

The remarkable difference a Harley Street Skin Clinic treatment can provide

Sometimes we are just dying for an extra 20 minutes in bed. Thanks to the incredible bounds in cosmetology, Semi-Permanent Makeup can liberate you from the time-consuming chore of applying makeup, day in day out, to achieve your desired aesthetic.

Leave that eyebrow pencil, lip liner or concealer tucked away in the drawer, and instead, steal a few more moments in bed by waking up professionally preened every single day.

Semi-Permanent Makeup can be applied to many areas of the face and body, in fact, practically any dermal tissue you feel is suffering from a loss of pigment. Over-plucked, or sparse brows? Want to add some subtle definition or shape to the lips? Perhaps you're fed up of eyeliner wearing away just halfway through the day - Semi-Permanent Makeup can help here.

It's also an incredibly effective method of disguise. Do you suffer from vitiligo or have a prominent birthmark which is causing distress? Perhaps you are left with an unsightly scar or are conscious of a particularly visible patch of scalp - cosmetic tattooing makes quick and easy work of blending areas which may be catching the eye for all the wrong reasons.

Even a mere millimetre of pigment here and there will make all the difference to the arch of the brow, or the arch of the lip. Professional precision can even give you a natural uplift, broaden or slim the face, and visually revive tired eyes. Forget wonky brows, visible scar tissue or reapplying your lipstick throughout the day - that was in the past!

Semi-Permanent Makeup FAQs

The answer to some of the most common questions you may have

It's only natural to have questions if you are considering pursuing a treatment for the first time, and at Harley Street Skin, it's important to us that you feel confident and comfortable at every stage of your journey. To help you find the answers you need, here are a few of the more common quibbles that we find our clients frequently ask...

The term 'Semi-Permanent Makeup' emcompasses 2 types of treatment at Harley Street Skin: Medical Tattooing and Temporary Camouflage.

Medical Tattooing uses needles to implant medically graded pigment into the dermal layer of the skin. This alters the colour or shade of the treated skin, and can be used to blend, blur, fill, reshape and refine. Cosmetic tattoo machines are a lot softer than normal tattoo machines, meaning they can be used on the face and around the delicate eye area. It also means that pigment does not penetrate the skin as deeply and therefore will fade over the course of a few years.

Temporary Camouflage, on the other hand, is a less drastic method of coverage. It is a special waterproof cosmetic cream used to conceal a wide range of skin conditions and disorders. It is completely safe to use and can be worn every day. Some conditions which cannot be treated with tattooing benefit astonishingly from Temporary Camouflage treatment.

Semi-Permanent Makeup can be used to visually improve scars and stretch marks, camouflage grafts into surrounding skin; enhance facial features such as the eyebrows, lips and lashlines; repigment vitiligo, and reconstruct nipples post mastectomy.

The benefits of Semi-Permanent Makeup aren't just visual either - they can be psychological. We find that our patients often want to feel more confident in their natural appearance, save time on arduous makeup routines, finalise a difficult medical journey, or just wake up already feeling fabulous. Semi-Permanent Makeup helps them achieve just this.

There are a few things which might affect your ability to undergo Medical Tattooing, and you should refrain from treatment if:

  • You have keloid scarring
  • You are under 18 years of age
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • The area to be tattooed is not fully healed
  • You suffer from active Vitiligo (A remission period of at least 7 years is required.)
  • You are taking or have been taken Roaccutane/Antabuse within the last 6 months.
  • You are looking to cover a birthmark or Port Wine Stain. (Instead see Temporary Camouflage.)

Temporary Camouflage is a special, waterproof cream used to conceal skin imperfections - think of it as a durable, heavy duty concealer. It is easy to apply and will endure activities such as showering, swimming or playing sports without running or smudging. Skin Camouflage lasts up to 12 hours on the face and 2-3 days on the body.

Skin Camouflage is suitable for:

  • Acne
  • Scars
  • Bruises
  • Vitiligo
  • Rosacea
  • Psoriasis
  • Age Spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Thread Veins
  • Stretch Marks
  • Uneven Skin Tone
  • Port Wine Stains
  • Hyperpigmentation

Patients find that once they have been shown application techniques and selected the correct colour choice, the results are incredibly lightweight and feel as though there is absolutely nothing on the skin whatsoever.

Medical Tattooing can last up to 5 years if properly cared for. In order to maintain best results, we would recommend annual/bi-annual top-ups to ensure the area is kept looking fresh and defined.

Temporary Camouflage, however, will remain in place for up to 12 hours if applied to the face and up 2-3 days on the body, due to less general wear-and-tear.

Most treatments range from around 30 minutes to 2 and a half hours.

Having said this, Medical Tattooing is a multi-treatment process and it will take a series of sessions to obtain the best results.

Tattooing can also be slightly uncomfortable, therefore anaesthetics can be used before and during the procedure if requested. Waiting for anaesthetic cream to take effect will also elongate your treatment somewhat.

You will first begin with a patch test to gauge sensitivity to the pigment, and treatment may only begin once this the treated area has fully recovered - this means that sessions can only take place approximately every 4-8 weeks.

General side effects of Medical Tattooing may include swelling, tenderness, redness and slight scabbing. Aside from the scabbing - which assists the healing process - these symptoms should all be well on their way within 48 hours of treatment.

It is worth noting that pigment used to treat the brows and the eyes will look darker in colour for the first few days, but will soften over the course of the healing process. Lips, too, are prone to residual swelling and may chap. Try to keep them thoroughly moisturised.

You'll be glad to hear that recovery from Medical Tattooing is next to nothing.

It’s best to leave the treated area uncovered by makeup as you heal, although a little mineral makeup will be fine. All in all, it should take around 10-14 days for the treated skin to heal over properly.

Neither Medical Tattooing nor Temporary Camouflage Makeup should affect your ability to work.

Areas treated with Medical Tattooing may stay slightly tender, but won't stop you from returning to work straightaway after treatment. Just be sure to keep the area clean, well moisturised and away from direct sunlight as you heal.
