So, how exactly do they work?
To understand this, we must first understand the role of the stem cell itself.
Stem cells are special human cells used to repair cells and tissues which have been damaged as a result of injury, ageing or disease. Stem cells can repair many other groups of cells including bone, muscle, cartilage, heart and skin cells. They are extremely intuitive and it is this cellular intelligence which allows them to replicate just the right amount needed for localised repair. When concentrated, they can be used to encourage healing of very specific areas about the body.
The principal types of stem cells are totipotent, pluripotent and multipotent. The latter - multipotent stem cells - being the only category which is currently approved for treatment-use. Multipotent stem cells are further divided into 3 groups:
|Neuronal Stem Cells||These are found in the brain and can replicate into different types of nerve cells||Haematopoietic Stem Cells||These develop to become types of blood cells|
|Mesenchymal Stem Cells||These become bone, muscle, cartilage, heart and skin cells|
Multipotent mesenchymal stem cells can divide and develop into multiple specialised cell types and are self-renewing. This means they can repair, replace and renew tissues and organs alike.
Stem cell technology works because inflamed or damaged tissue sends chemical messages which are recognised by multipotent stem cells. This has the effect of activating the cells to make them repair the afflicted area. Due to the nature of multipotent stem cells, they replicate until the damaged cells are healed and then stop multiplying.
Stem cell treatments, or regenerative medicine, in a nutshell promotes the repair response for diseased, dysfunctional or damaged tissue. Specialised stem cells can be implanted into a person and, for example, can be injected straight into the heart muscle. There has been over 30 years of research performed on the safety and efficacy of using these naturally-occurring stem cells in treatment, and the results have enabled us to rethink our approach to ageing, rejuvenation, injury and disease.
Whilst there are many principal types of stem cell, the ones traditionally made use of in treatment are known as Multipotent stem cells. This is because of their phenomenal capacity to self-renew by dividing and developing into multiple specialised cell types that are present in all tissue.
There are 3 groups of Multipotent stem cells about the body; these are:
Neuronal stem cells (Found in the brain, they form different types of nerve cells), Haematopoietic stem cells (They form types of blood cells), Mesenchymal stem cells (They form bone, tendons, muscle, cartilage, and skin cells).

Embryonic stem cells are harvested very soon after birth in a GMP-regulated laboratory in a teaching hospital lab in the UK. They are then all thoroughly screened for infection, disease and genetic abnormalities prior to use.
There was some controversy surrounding the use of embryonic stem cells in the early days of stem cell research, although this has since settled as understanding of the stem cell process has improved. Even so, some people still prefer to use their own stem cells despite that embryonic cells are far more potent, with a greater capacity to replicate and multiple, than older cells.
Doctors have performed stem cell transplants where stem cells have replaced cells damaged by chemotherapy or disease. These newly-deposited cells have then served to bolster the patient's immune system and fight back against various cancers and blood-related diseases (such as leukemia, lymphoma, neuroblastoma and multiple myeloma).

Firstly, the cells are harvested from either fat, bone marrow or umbilical cord, then examined for any abnormalities, diseases or malfunction. Then, these cells are propagated to increase their numbers to therapeutic levels, then stored in liquid nitrogen until use.
Unlike some treatments, successful stem cell treatment does not depend on a patient's general health - or even age - going into the procedure. All treatments are successful, although results may vary from patient to patient.
You may feel some minor discomfort after treatment if you have had stem cells injected into your skin topically. There may also be some residual redness for a few days, but nothing that should last any longer than that. Please note that treatment itself is not typically painful, either, as patients having stem cell injections will be given pain control prior to treatment.
Whilst there is no designated 'downtime' in the traditional sense, we do recommend that you refrain from flying for a minimum of 5 days post-treatment. This is to ensure both optimum results and comfort whilst you heal.
