It's only natural to have questions if you are considering pursuing a treatment for the first time, and at Harley Street Skin, it's important to us that you feel confident and comfortable at every stage of your journey. To help you find the answers you need, here are a few of the more common quibbles that we find our clients frequently ask...
PRP-assisted treatments work by isolating a special part of the blood - the component which helps the body with rapid healing, cell multiplication and regeneration. When this component is isolated, and then combined with harvested fat, the body accepts it with ease. That's right - no more reactions or rejections. On top of this, PRP-assisted transfers work to encourage the body to produce more collagen proteins, making the treated area appear firmer, smoother and far more youthful than if injected with just fat alone.
We begin by using a small cannula to harvest fat from an area decided upon at your consultation - this is known as your 'donor site', and is treated with local anaesthetic. At the same time, blood is drawn from the arm and processed through the system: a special centrifuge which spins rapidly to separate the blood into layers. This is how we are able to obtain the platelet-rich plasma layer, and prepare it for reinjection alongside the harvested fat, now rich with healing platelets.
Typically, only around 120 cc's of blood is taken (the same amount as is usually drawn during a standard blood test) although this can vary depending on the the amount of platelets required/area size.
Fat Transfers can do anything from helping to correct a lopsided bust to improving scarring; restoring fullness to the face or shapeliness to the body. In conjunction with PRP, all of this can be achieved whilst bolstering the skin's appearance of youth and quality. By drawing on the body's natural healing responses, PRP procedures help to ensure the most natural-looking results. This is due to a drastic improvement in the treated skin's tone and texture as well as overall fullness - even working deeper down (as far as the muscles and deeper structures) to help tighten and provide subtle but indisputable lift.
Whether you are just unhappy with your shape, or are suffering from a loss of volume from weight loss, ageing - even medications or illness - PRP Fat Transfers will help restore a healthy looking finish to your problem area.
Results of your PRP Fat Transfer are permanent, however it should be noted that the rate of fat survival can vary. This means that only a percentage of injected fat will remain a permanent fixture. This is, unfortunately, an unavoidable side effect of any Fat Transfer procedure due to the body's instinct to reabsorb it's own natural filler.
These rates jump from an average of 50-60% survival with normal Fat Transfer, to a whopping 80% survival when assisted by PRP. Any deposited fat which survives beyond 6 weeks of treatment should generally be considered permanent.
PRP Fat Transfers take approximately 1-2 hours to complete, with patients welcome to return home the very same day.
With regards to visible improvements, PRP-assisted Fat Transfers are continual, with effects making themselves known over the course of 6-12 months.
Fat Transfers can lead to some bruising, swelling and temporary numbness around the sites of harvest and injection. These are all expedited when combined with PRP, helping the body to heal much more quickly by supplying it with an influx of dense healing platelets.
PRP, also, has the added benefit of running zero risk of allergic reaction or rejection.
PRP Fat Transfers enable patients to get back to normality within 1 week, although this can depend on the size of the area treated. These procedures, however, typically require no hospital stay and leave practically no visible scarring. Any post-procedure discomfort can be soothed by analgesics and gentle cold compression.
Larger areas can result in some residual swelling beyond the 1 week recovery window, although this is easily managed and will shortly improve.
Typically, patients are able to return to work after 1-2 weeks of downtime. This is of course, subject to an individual's own rate of recovery, as well as the area itself. For example, more extensive Fat Transfers - such as those performed on the buttocks or thighs - generally require more downtime than smaller areas such as the face and neck.
