Scalp Micropigmentation

At the most basic level, SMP creates the illusion of active hair follicles on the scalp. SMP achieves this by mimicking the natural hairline, making hundreds - sometimes thousands - of minute dots onto the head, in a similar way to how you might receive a tattoo: piercing the dermis and placing coloured pigment within the skin.

Whilst it may be very easy to just think of SMP as just 'tattooing', both training and technique for this particular branch of tattooing is incredibly specialised. From mapping the most organic hairline to creating custom pigment designed to perfectly match your natural skin and hair tones, SMP requires eagle-eyed precision and real-eye for the natural contours of the scalp.

By adding strategically placed shading along the hairline, our medical tattooists our able to eradicate a complaint that many of our patients have struggled with for years.

SMP typically sees a huge surge in self confidence, and often even strips back years from the face, leaving patients looking younger, fresher and undoubtedly more smiley.

This will entirely depend on the method used. For those seeking the 'close shave' look, pigment can be administered deeper into the dermis, resulting in permanent implantation of colour.

Alternatively, those that may be concerned about committing to something permanent - perhaps those worried about a change in hair tone whilst transitioning to grey, more superficial cosmetic tattooing (similar to Microblading for the brow or lash line) can be achieved. This method typically remains visible for up to 3 years.

This will depend entirely on the size of the area treated although the majority of our patients require three sessions to see optimum results. These sessions may last anywhere between 1-5 hours, with the first session typically requiring the most time.

These times are however subject to change depending on factors such as: head size, the complexity of your particular case, and/or medical history.

Side effects of SMP are very similar to that of tradition tattooing - however slight shorter lived. Patients will likely experience some inflammation, redness and tenderness as a result of the small perforations made - beyond this, you may experience some scabbing over of the small wounds, and/or slight weeping. By days 4-5, any visible symptoms should begin to settle down. This is all perfectly normal, and practitioners will advise you how best to treat and cleanse the scalp during this time.

Recovery from SMP is minimal, although each session will require a minimum healing time of 5-7 days in between. Following your last treatment, the newly implanted pigment will take roughly one month to fully settle into the skin. There may be some residual scabbing and/or roughness beyond this, but by this point in your recovery, any side effects should be minimal.

There is no need to abstain from work due to Scalp Micropigmentation treatment, although it is sometimes recommended that you keep the area covered for the first couple of days - allowing time for the treated skin to breathe intermittently. If the practitioner feels this is necessary, you will be advised further on the day of treatment.
