When skin begins to crepe and ruche, swamping our once youthful faces, it can really make us look and feel haggard. The sad reality is that ageing happens to everyone and - unfortunately - getting loose skin and wrinkles is a fact of life. Keeping them, however, is rather a different story.
There are lots of things that can be done, pre and post wrinkle, and we at Harley Street Skin have made it our business to perfect as many of them as possible. But first, what exactly are we dealing with here? The Science of Ageing Explained
As we age, certain biological processes that once worked very well begin to slow.
A lot of these processes impact the skin, and therefore it is here that ageing tends to make itself known. Some of these include our ability to produce oil so the skin can hydrate itself; the ability to remain elastic, and the ability to make the collagen fibres which keep it plumped.
In the peak of health, skin is actually capable of stretching itself out by 100% and snapping right back into position. That is our supply of a protein known as elastin at work, retracting the skin and keeping it stretchy. When getting older, elastin production slows right down and our bodies can no longer do this effectively.
Collagen production can also no longer keep up with the rate of natural depletion, like it does in youth, so we find our skin becomes sunken and less spongy to the touch. Wrinkles (saggy skin, pronounced lines or crevices etc.) are therefore a result of the slowing down of many of these processes simultaneously.
Wrinkles typically first appear around the eyes, mouth and neck, and later the chest and hands - the areas which spend the most time exposed to harmful sun rays. This sun damage, combined with years of repeated facial expression, is what leads us on an inevitable path to brow lines, crow’s feet, and drooping jowls.
That's right, everything from laughing, frowning and squinting right down to the position you rest your head on your pillow at night can (and does!) contribute to the wrinkling process. Even things such as poor diet, pollution and smoking will all accelerate the processes that occur naturally with ageing.
That is why the best approach to wrinkles tends to be preemptive, targeting these phases of degradation before they become visible. This can be aided by diligent skincare as well as protecting your skin each and every day with a high-quality SPF. Beyond this, there are of course other measures we can take…
With a wealth of treatments, designed just for you...
If you're feeling that wrinkles are becoming a concern, there are a number of different routes you can take to combat them. More than ever, in fact. Your approach to said wrinkles will largely depend a lot on where you sit on the wrinkle timeline. Are you just beginning to notice the signs of fine lines creeping in or are you instead in need of something to turn back the clock? Are you battling semi-superficial damage or rather deeper depressions and sagging? Firstly, is your approach to wrinkles...
Preemptive? If you are attempting to stave off wrinkles, or are just beginning to notice a few lingering lines, Botox will help to relax the muscles responsible for these impressions and leave you with a far smoother complexion. Alternatively, PRP can be used to help maintain healthy function of collagen fibres, keeping the skin at its most elastic and supple.
Repressive? Those who are a little bit further along the line, but still facing relatively superficial wrinkles can take an approach geared at stripping and rejuvenating the affected layer of skin. Treatments such as Microdermabrasion, Innopen, Dermaroller and Chemical Peels will help to gently resurface the skin and bring back youthful plumpness.
Restorative? For more severe wrinkling and ruching, you will likely be looking at either Pelleve to tighten the offending skin, or taking the more traditional surgical or thread-assisted approach to Facelifts. Alternatively, filling any deep set wrinkles and replumping areas of depression can have equally amazing results. Treatments such as Sculptra, Ellanse and more traditional Dermal Filler are designed to do just this.
