What are Cankles?
Cankles are simply thick ankles with very little definition where the calf meets the ankle. When this happens it causes the calves to retain fluid and increase in size which can make your lower legs look swollen or muscular. While not a medical term, cankles are often used to describe ankle swelling caused by inactivity, injuries, pregnancy, certain medications, and other underlying health condition. Cankles are not a medical condition, but rather is an expression used to describe the absence of a taper in the ankle area from the calf muscles.
Cankles can happen to anyone, but they are especially common in people with a family history of the condition or those who carry some excess weight. Prolonged standing or sitting and some other lifestyle factors certainly can help to provoke the swelling. Swelling is common if you sprain or strain the ankle. Injury to the ankle bone can specifically lead to osteochondral defects (OCD). Cankles are not only the result of temporary conditions such as a lack of movement or an injury or infection requiring bed rest, they can also be a serious condition and a sign of illness symptoms behind it all.

What do cankles look like?
Cankles might be:
- Under-defined: The calf and ankle seem to blend together into one, with little delineation at the ankle
- Swelling: Your ankles may appear swollen or round, particularly if you have been standing or sitting for extended periods.
- Toughness: It may be due to water retention or lipid deposits, and the skin sometimes feels too tight and tough.
