Labiaplasty, sometimes referred to as 'vulval surgery', is a surgical procedure performed on a female's external genitalia - most commonly the labia minora. It is an increasingly common treatment, being dubbed by many media outlets as one of 'the world's fastest-growing cosmetic procedures'.
Labiaplasty involves the surgical trimming of excess labia minora tissue. This is done in order to reduce protrusion of the labia minora and allow the outer lips of the vulva (the labia majora) to neatly conceal them. Using a series of small incisions, women that find they have particularly protruding labia minora can simply have this surplus removed with absolutely no negative impact on sexual sensitivity or pleasure.
Most women that choose to undergo Labiaplasty do so due to some form of discomfort - either physical discomfort from surplus skin chafing or pinching, or psychological discomfort due to feeling self-conscious and/or embarrassed about being intimate with partners.

Depending on your desired outcome, there are two common methods of Labiaplasty - these are referred to as The Trim Method and The Wedge Method.
Using the 'Trim' method, the surgeon uses a scalpel or laser to make a small incision along the length of the labia minora. They then endeavour to remove/cut away any excess tissue in the area and close off the incision with fine stitches.
With the 'Wedge' method, the surgeon instead removes a triangular portion (a V-shaped 'wedge') from one or both sides of the labia as required. The incision, or incisions, are then closed by joining the remaining edges to cinch the labia in. This typically results in a very neat and natural-looking outcome.
Undeniably, the biggest success after surgery is confidence.
Despite it not being a concern you feel you wish to discuss with others, a Labiaplasty can dispel insecurity and improve your self-esteem, making intimacy and appearing undressed in front of others feel far more comfortable.

Results are permanent. Initially, following surgery, the incision sites will appear to be pink and slightly raised. However, over time these fade until you are left with only very faint lines, disguised by the natural creases of the skin. At your appointments, your surgeon will provide you with post-operative instructions to help you achieve optimal results.
Labiaplasty typically takes around 1-2 hours
Most women are then able to return home relatively quickly - often the very same day - after the procedure. More severe skin removal may however require an overnight stay so that doctors are able to keep you as comofrtable as possible during your preliminary healing stages.
Following Labiaplasty, it is quite normal to experience bruising, swelling and soreness for the first few weeks. You may also experience discomfort passing urine or sitting down, however painkillers can be administered to help with this.
You will likely need to take a few weeks to recover from Labiaplasty in full, however it can take a few months for the skin to heal entirely. Your surgeon will give you careful instructions to follow during this period to aid the most successful healing process. Please also note that it is advised that patients refrain from sexual activity until advised safe by your doctor.
Generally, 2 weeks from work is recommended post-Labiaplasty. However, your surgeon will advise you further regarding time off as it can depend on the method of surgery and your own individual healing process.
