Uneven Features
Facial unevenness
What is an asymmetrical face?
Asymmetrical face indicates that the two sides of the face are not exactly alike. Asymmetry is a very normal feature that we all have to some extent. Indeed, with a perfectly symmetrical face, each half would mirror the other, but slight asymmetries in facial proportions and features are normal and can even add uniqueness or interest to a person’s face.
Asymmetry can sometimes be even more evident. It could be due to ageing, previous injuries or lifestyle habits like smoking or too much sun time. If someone has always been with asymmetrical features, there’s typically nothing to worry about. But if something suddenly looks asymmetrical to a person’s face, that could indicate a more serious condition, like Bell’s palsy or a stroke, and they should seek medical attention immediately.
Testing for asymmetrical face:
Mirror check
Stand in front of a mirror and picture a line running down the center of your face. Look at both sides of your face to see if your eyes, mouth, nostrils or other features line up evenly.
Photo test
Snap a picture of you, looking directly and clearly at the camera. Then print it out and highlight major points like your forehead, your chin, your nostrils, your cheekbones and the corners of your mouth.
Drawing lines
Use a ruler to create lines between matched points on your face (eg, one side of your forehead to the other). This will tell you whether your attributes are the same or different.
Use filters
You can use apps or online tools that analyze your face’s symmetry. These can help you see uneven facial features between the left and right sides of your face.
Touch test
Feel gently on your face from forehead to jaw to find differences in bone structure or muscle development.
