IPL In London

With over half a million procedures undertaken, you're in safe hands

Whether you're battling with excess hair, age spots, sun damage, thread veins or stretch marks, IPL could be the long-term solution you've been looking for. IPL - which stands for 'Intense Pulse Light' - is a fast, safe and long-lasting solution to all sorts of embarrassing or unsightly skin and hair complaints.

Lesley Says

“IPL is one of our most popular treatments. It’s both a great anti-ageing tool, and a reliable method of hair removal. You can use it all over the body!”

Dr Khan Says

“IPL allows us to focus our efforts on treating the lower layers of skin without causing any surface damage that requires a recovery window. This makes it a very popular choice at the clinic.”

IPL Before & Afters

The remarkable difference a Harley Street Skin Clinic treatment can provide

Many people assume that IPL is solely a laser treatment, but it instead makes use of broad wavelength light to administer topical heat to your problem areas. Forget superficial serums, lotions and potions - IPL delves deep into the dermis to wipe out the problem at its source…

IPL Before

IPL is an incredible solution to unwanted hair, offering significant (and permanent!) hair reduction. Forget time-consuming shaving that can only fend off the first sign of regrowth for a matter of hours; IPL offers a solution far superior to even pricey waxing and bleaching. Never again will you need to run the risk of prickly anything!

We know that skin imperfections don't always just stem from the follicle though - sometimes it's the skin itself that is in need of attention. IPL can help you here too, wiping out redness; stretch marks, red veins, scarring, age spots as well as many other issues which impact the skin's superficial layer.

IPL achieves this through various levels of photo-penetration. Beginning at the epidermis, IPL can reach as far down as the hypodermis to ensure it's equipped to treat problems both on the surface and ones which have arisen from deeper issues. It is this precision targeting which makes IPL a treatment to be reckoned with.

The answer to some of the most common questions you may have

It's only natural to have questions if you are considering pursuing a treatment for the first time, and at Harley Street Skin, it's important to us that you feel confident and comfortable at every stage of your journey. To help you find the answers you need, here are a few of the more common quibbles that we find our clients frequently ask...

IPL is also known as 'flash-lamp therapy'. This is because it makes use of high-energy light pulses. When applied to the skin via a handheld device, these pulses of light are momentarily absorbed by the cells, generating a heat. Pending the depth of this heat, IPL can work to breakup pigment and melanin (which is what is responsible for pigmentation, discolouration, age spots etc.), collapse the walls of spider veins, or kill the hair follicles it comes into contact with.

This heat will also trigger the body's response to produce collagen, leaving the treated area more firm and taut. This additionally makes IPL great for rejuvenation, reducing wrinkles and general anti-ageing.

IPL is an effective way of removing age spots and red veins; as well as improving the appearance of rosacea, acne scars, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles.

It is also a popular method of rejuvenation, helping to tighten the skin and improve general tone. This is because IPL will dispel impurities such as broken veins and capillaries, even out a mottled complexion, boost collagen production for younger-looking skin, and strip years from a tired face.

This will depend on the nature of your IPL treatment. Treated skin will continue to produce new collagen for around 6 months, following a course of IPL and generally speaking, IPL offers permanent results, forever waving goodbye to age spots and other surface discolouration. With regards to hair removal, however, IPL is different to traditional Laser removal in that it can require a little bit of upkeep. This is because hairs go through a growth and rest cycle and will only respond to IPL while they are growing. Maintenance treatments may be required to ensure the best results.

Duration-wise, sessions of IPL generally depend on how much attention your problem area needs, as well as how much ground there is to cover. On average, though, IPL sessions tend to last between 30-90 minutes.

With regards to how long it will take to see results, patients will notice an improvement from their very first session although it is recommended that you undergo a series of sessions for best results. Up to eight sessions may be needed for hair removal (4-6 weeks apart) and around 3-5 for more superficial complaints such as age spots and red vein removal etc. (4-6 weeks apart, also).

IPL shouldn't ever hurt, but some may find it a little uncomfortable - although this will entirely depend on your sensitivity level. Most people liken the sensation to that of being lightly flicked with an elastic band.

You can of course request the use of topical anaesthetic if you are at all concerned, but it is actually very rare for patients to feel this is necessary.

IPL treatments typically result in scabbing, some minor swelling and redness, but this all goes away relatively quickly. You may also notice that the treated area feels to be radiating a little heat, similar to how a mild sunburn might. In addition to this, sensitive or fair skin can also see some temporary hyperpigmentation (the appearance of slight freckling and/or minor discolouration). This is no cause for alarm and is a perfectly normal response to IPL. This will also subside within a few days of treatment.

Areas treated for hair removal may also experience some itchiness.

IPL recovery is minimal, and certainly nothing that will require making use of any of those precious holiday days.

In terms of complete skin recovery, however, this can take up to two weeks. Areas treated for certain complaints such as freckling, age spots or pigmentation may see some residual crusting which is merely the surfacing of damaged cells which were not fully filtered through the lymphatic system. This can be visible for up to 14 days.

The same day. There is no reason that undergoing IPL will affect your ability to work. If there is any residual redness, this can easily be concealed with a touch of mineral makeup.
