What are crow’s feet?
Crow’s feet are also known as laugh lines, smile lines or character lines; they’re the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that appear in the outer corners of your eyes. They typically begin as lines you see when you smile, laugh or squint, created by the small underlying muscles surrounding your eyes contracting. With time, as you lose elasticity and the structural proteins collagen and elastin decrease, the lines can become deeper, even when your face is relaxed. It’s a normal part of aging and a testament to all the feelings you’ve expressed over the years.
Why are men more prone to crow’s feet?
According to studies, men initially develop crow’s feet earlier than women. Men in their 30s to 50s have more pronounced crow’s feet than women. That’s because men generate more of an enzyme called matrix metalloproteinases or (MMP) that dismantles collagen, the protein that keeps skin plump and elastic.
In terms of lifestyle habits. Men are outside much more, skip sunscreen or even a skincare regimen completely. Such habits lead to extra sun damage, and furthermore early ageing. Women, on the other hand, start doing skincare from an earlier age and are more watchful than men. Women often use makeup that contains SPF, which offers partial blockage from UV rays as well.
