Scarring awareness
A scar is a mark that is left behind after your skin heals from a wound or injury. The body creates new tissue or collagen fibres to close the wound. The newly formed tissue is different from the rest of your skin. Depending on how deep your injury is, the visible line or mark can look and feel different.
Types of scars:
Once the scar is formed, it may feel sore or tender. This happens when the scar is still healing or if the wound is deep. Some pain goes away over time, but some stays longer.
Scars are usually itchy, especially when they’re healing. This is because of possible irritation of the nearby nerves and th eskin’s regeneration process.
Scars over joint or large area can make the skin feel tight. This is especially common with contracture scars, which can limit movement if they are severe.
Some types of scars can cause the skin to become elevated. This is common with hypertrophic or keloid scars. The scar may appear thickier or harder than the surrounding skin and take months or years to flatten out.
Scars, especially the fresh ones, can be more or less sensitive than normal skin. The scars can be more or less sensitive when you touched it. Some people experience a form of numbness in the surrounding area, especially when the nerves are injured.
A Scar may appear different in colour from the surrounding skin. Some are reddish-pink, or more darker than your skin colour. Scar may not fully blend in to your natural skin tone, even though it disappears over time.
You need to see your doctor if the scar causes you pain and discomfort or restricts your movement. Scars over the joints and persistent pain or discomfort may indicate an underlying issue that needs medical attention.
Furthermore, if your keloids are growing, rising, or spreading beyond the original wound, it needs medical assistance, as it is hard to treat it on your own.
Although it is rare for a scar to be infected, you should seek medical advice if you experience redness, swelling, or warmth in the affected area. It may also affect you emotionally, especially if it lowers your self-esteem. So, if you have a history of scarring, it is best to consult your doctor for proper treatments.
A scar develop everytime the skin is injured from a surgery, cut, burn, or even from acne. Your body reacts quickly by sending collagen to the damaged area to heal it. Collagen helps close the wound, but can not form the exact original skin. Because of this, the scars texture and appearance are different from the surrounding skin.
Scarring varies with different individuals. Different factors like genetics, skin type, and how your body heals. The following factors may be at higher risk of developing scars:
Some scars can still be painful after the skin has healed, particularly those from deep wounds or surgeries. The pain can occur if the scar tissue presses against one, or if it is closer to a nerve. Some person also feels a tingling sensation or discomfort when touched.
Skin may become tighter as the scars heal, especially those contracture scars. It may restrict your range of motion if the scars occur over your joint, such as finger, elbow, or knee. It may be difficult to fully stretch the skin in the affected area for someone with burn scars.
Although it is uncommon, scars can get infected, particularly if they are not taken care of or properly cleaned while they are healing. Redness, warmth, and swelling are indicators of infections and should be treated immediately.
Wounds can still have impacts on your self-esteem even if it is a normal part of recovery. Having visible or large scars can cause anxiety or even self-consciousness, especially if it is located on the face or visible parts of the body.
Keloids may continue to grow after the wound heals. It may result to a huge and elevated scars larger than the initial injury. These can affect people both physically and psychologically as it can be itchy, painful, and unsightly.
Treating your wounds as soon as possible can avoid scarring. Severe scars can be prevented if you treat your wound as early as possible. To promote healing and stop the infection that could worsen the scar, apply an antibiotic ointment on your wound and cover it with a bandage.
Avoid picking at scabs
Picking a scab on your wound while healing can worsen the scar. Scabs are the protection of your skin while healing, picking them up will cause your wound to reopen and may lead to more visible scars.
Applying moisturiser every day will help protect your skin. Keeping your wounded skin and its surrounding can help with the healing process. Most doctors recommend the use of creams or gels that contain silicone for scar prevention. Continue moisturising the area to maintain soft skin and encourage proper healing.
Sun protection
A scar being exposed to the sun can get darker and more visible. Protect the healing part of the skin with sunscreen at least SPF 30 every time you walk outside. This will help prevent scars from getting darker or more visible.
You may use over-the-counter products in treating small or minor scars. Products with ingredients like onion extract, vitamin E, and retinoids can help scars fade over time. We recommend that you visit your dermatologist for more complex or severe scars, as over-the-counter products might not help take them away. Your dermatologist can recommend what scar treatments are best for you.
Use pressure garments
Individuals with burn scars can benefit from using pressure garments. It may help on the formation and thickness of burn scars to be reduced.
Smoking can reduce the oxygen flow to the skin, making the healing process slow down and increasing the chance of scarring. It is better that you avoid smoking to help lessen the chance of scarring.
Hydrate and nourish the skin
Eating healthy foods that are rich in vitamins A, C, and E, and drinking lots of water to stay hydrated will help promote healthy regeneration of the skin.

Gently massaging a healing scar can help break down tough scar tissue and improve its appearance over time. This is especially helpful for preventing raised scars like keloids or hypertrophic scars.
Visit your dermatologist
It is best to consult your dermatologist if you are keloidal or have a history of developing scars. They may recommend treatments to help minimise the appearance of scar formation, such as surgical removal, laser therapy, steroid injections, as well as silicone sheets. They can also perform scar revision surgery, like skin grafts or excision.
