The symptoms

Redness & Swelling

This is typically common if you’ve encountered first and second-degree burns. It is where a certain body part becomes swollen and appears in red.

Blisters

This could also develop in second degree burns. It forms as fluid that collects between the layers of the skin. However, seek emergency medical treatment if the burn affects a widespread area, such as any of the following: face hands buttocks groin feet.

Pain

It varies depending on the burn severity. For mild pain, it usually occurs in first-degree burns while intense pain occurs in second-degree burns, and severe pain typically occurs in third-degree burns that most often lead to numbness due to nerve damage.

Charred or Leathery Skin

This typically occurs in third and fourth-degree burns as the skin might appear charred or leathery which indicates a severe damage to the skin. It usually requires immediate medical attention from qualified medical professionals.

Is your burn severe enough to see a doctor? Our experts can assess it.

When we heard of the word burn, we would always think of a serious case and should immediately ask for expert advice from doctors. More often than not, people still get confused when it is the right time to seek professional medical help whenever they encounter burns.

The causes
What causes are related to burns?

Fluid loss can lead to serious complications like shock and organ dysfunction that will most likely require fluid management as well as the monitoring.

  • Scar Formation

Whether it’s minor burns or deep burn injury, most cases leave scar once it’s fully healed. This does not only leave a physical impact on an individual but it could also affect their well-being as it can be one of the major factors in having a low self-esteem.

  • Contractures

Movement and personality may be altered since surgery could become an essential requirement to treat the disea

The prevention
How can you prevent burns from hot liquids?

Make sure to always check the temperature of any hot liquids before consuming it especially when serving to children. One of the most common causes of burns are scalding liquids. It can also help the use of insulated cups whenever you drink hot beverages.

  • Working in an Extra Safe Distance from Hot Surfaces. Very hot things like ovens, heaters etc. must be touched with care in order to avoid direct contact. Use a tool (like tongs) to handle objects near hot surfaces, and wear gloves whenever handling hot items.
  • Install and Maintain Smoke Detectors. Installing smoke alarms helps detect fires early and prevents burns.
  • Why Smoke Detectors Matter. This material is very important since it is one of the must-haves in ensuring none of those burn accidents will ever happen within your locality. This way you can be alerted to any fire incident in time and seek help from the professionals, if anything goes down.
  • Test Smoke Detectors Often. Not only having smoke alarms, but it also needs to be functional on time. Also every month test your smoke alarms to make sure that they work by sounding the alarm.
  • Fire Safety for The Home Front. Every member of the household should know how to respond in case a fire breaks out, and all have some idea on prevention of Burns.
Why is fire safety awareness among household members necessary?

There is no definite time when fire incidents will happen, so it is better to make sure that everyone in the household knows the basic response to fire incidents or burn injuries. By knowing all these, it could minimize any serious burn injuries that may happen. It can also help to place a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen.

Flammable Items Must Be Kept Away From Heat

As flammable items they should not be stored near heat sources so that there may not be any fire accident due to them. Especially when you are not at home it happens. You should also make sure the appliances are plugged off when leaving the house for a long period of time as it usually causes fire incidents in most homes.

Use Safety Covers for Electrical Outlets

It can prevent any accidental contact with electrical outlets that oftentimes lead to electrical burns.

How can safety covers for electrical outlets help prevent burns?

This is one of the most important things to have at home especially when you have kids or toddlers. If you can’t prevent the kids from going near any electrical outlets, make sure to use safety covers so that they won’t have any direct contact with the outlets and to avoid any chemical burns and thermal burns.

Discard Electrical Cords with Exposed Wires

Install electrical outlet covers. Check and discard electrical cords with exposed wires. Most burns happen due to this situation so make sure to be mindful of this.

Use Cool Water for Burns First Aid

It can significantly reduce burn severity and prevent further injury.

Why should cool water be applied in a case of burns for first aid?

It will give you relief from burn, pain and save your skin too. Immediately, you must flow cold water to the damaged area for 10 or 20 minutes. Be sure not to use ice water or icy cold water as that can make the injury worse. Do not cool with water for too long or will lead to hypothermia.
