What does it do?
A dermatofibroma is a fibrous tissue overgrowth, also called benign fibrous histiocytoma, is a non-cancerous hard lump that develops on the skin, typically on the arms or legs. This occurs when histiocytes, a type of immune cell that promotes inflammation and healing, cluster in response to small traumas like bug bites or scratches. Dermatofibromas are most often painless and harmless and there is no evidence that they are related to skin cancer, but sometimes they may be itchy or tender. Fortunately, they typically have no significant adverse effect on health.
Dermatofibroma removal procedure is a simple option if a dermatofibroma becomes bothersome or unwanted for cosmetic concern. It all starts with a consultation from one of our doctors. Similar to the mole removal procedure and skin tag removal, they will examine your dermatofibroma and ask about your medical history. If it needs to be removed, we will schedule an appointment for that procedure.
A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area during the treatment using laser therapy or surgical excision. You’ll feel a slight prick and then nothing. The dermatofibroma will be excised as carefully as possible and oversewn to promote proper healing.
Dermatofibroma removal is quick and simple, it only takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on how deep and wide the dermatofibroma is.
Because dermatofibromas grow deep inside the skin, they might scar a little when removed. There is nothing to worry because our doctors will also advise you on how to care for your scar so that it heals nicely. Given proper care, we will ensure optimal healing of your scars.
Dermatofibroma excision also requires little to no downtime afterwards, so you can get back to your daily routine immediately.
As dermatofibroma removal is performed under local anaesthetic, the procedure would be pain-free. The area is injected so that you won’t feel a thing, and you’ll be awake so you get to enjoy every minute of it. Minimal discomfort will be felt after the procedure but only temporary.
