What is a Dermatofibroma?

Skin Restoration

What does it do?

A dermatofibroma is a fibrous tissue overgrowth, also called benign fibrous histiocytoma, is a non-cancerous hard lump that develops on the skin, typically on the arms or legs. This occurs when histiocytes, a type of immune cell that promotes inflammation and healing, cluster in response to small traumas like bug bites or scratches. Dermatofibromas are most often painless and harmless and there is no evidence that they are related to skin cancer, but sometimes they may be itchy or tender. Fortunately, they typically have no significant adverse effect on health.

Dermatofibroma removal procedure is a simple option if a dermatofibroma becomes bothersome or unwanted for cosmetic concern. If your doctor sees that you have one, a dermatologist can easily remove the growth in a minor surgical procedure. Scars are minimal, healing is rapid and more importantly the appearance of the skin improves. Makes it a popular option for those wanting to treat discomfort or attain a smoother more uniform appearance.

Several benefits include:

  • Less discomfort
  • Better skin appearance
  • Less scarring
  • Quick recovery

The many types

Atypical Dermatofibroma

It is defined by large, irregular cells with large nuclei in addition to a background of typical spindle cells.

Cellular Dermatofibroma

A bulky layer of skin cells that can become even deeper; it can return if not completely removed.

Epithelioid Dermatofibroma

Has a distinct appearance characterised by relatively large, rounded cells similar to the appearance seen in certain skin spots.

Aneurysmal Dermatofibroma

Appears as red, purple or blue spots on the legs and is often thought to be a blood vessel problem.

Hemosiderotic Dermatofibroma

Contains small blood vessels and iron deposits, sometimes mistaken for darker skin tumours including melanoma.

The procedure
Precise, Gentle Removal
How does it work?

It all starts with a consultation from one of our doctors. Similar to the mole removal procedure and skin tag removal, they will examine your dermatofibroma and ask about your medical history. If it needs to be removed, we will schedule an appointment for that procedure.

A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area during the treatment using laser therapy or surgical excision. You’ll feel a slight prick and then nothing. The dermatofibroma will be excised as carefully as possible and oversewn to promote proper healing.

Swift, Seamless Procedure
How long does the removal take?

Dermatofibroma removal is quick and simple, it only takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on how deep and wide the dermatofibroma is.

Minimal, Careful Scarring
Will there be any scarring?

Because dermatofibromas grow deep inside the skin, they might scar a little when removed. There is nothing to worry because our doctors will also advise you on how to care for your scar so that it heals nicely. Given proper care, we will ensure optimal healing of your scars.

Back To Life Quickly
Is there any downtime?

Dermatofibroma excision also requires little to no downtime afterwards, so you can get back to your daily routine immediately.

Comfort In Care
Is it painful?

As dermatofibroma removal is performed under local anaesthetic, the procedure would be pain-free. The area is injected so that you won’t feel a thing, and you’ll be awake so you get to enjoy every minute of it. Minimal discomfort will be felt after the procedure but only temporary.

  • Anyone that has cosmetic reasons and seeks smoother, more uniform skin.
  • Patients who wish to minimise the risk of infection or spread.
The risks
Can risks be prevented?

Removing a dermatofibroma is safe to do, but there are some risks. This may lead to scarring, changes in skin colour or infection.

Having these potential risks, what you need to do is talk with your doctor. They may give you more insight into how those work and help guide your decision of which will be best for your situation. You will feel more confident about the surgical procedures if you stay informed.
