The condition

Nasal Deformity

Septum misalignment

What is deviated septum?

A septum that is off-center or crooked is called a deviated septum. This may make one nostril appear smaller, and create symptoms such as nasal congestion or increased episodes of chronic sinusitis. It is possible that you have been born with it, or perhaps it occurred due to some form of injury and develops as time passes.

Does a deviated septum cause sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea may worsen in deviated nasal septum. Sleep apnea is when breathing pauses during sleep for a long time due to something that is blocking the airway while we are sleeping.

If you have a deviated septum and block airflow in or out of the nasal cavity, it will make it more difficult to breathe, adding onto the problem further with forcing air through your mouth as well. Nasal steroid sprays may help reduce inflammation and improve airflow while you sleep.

The symptoms

Nasal congestion

Either one nasal passage or both sides of the nose may be obstructed.

Difficulty breathing

Narrows the airways so it makes it more difficult to breathe through your nose.

Frequent nosebleeds

Nosebleeds can occur due to dryness or irritation from uneven airflow.

Snoring or sleep problems

Breathing problems during the night that can cause snoring and lack of good sleep.

Sinus infections

Repeated sinus infections due to poor drainage.

Facial pain or headaches

Pain or pressure in the face or head.

Postnasal drip

Sensation of mucus drip that actually drips down your throat.

When to see a doctor?
Relief Through Care
How does it affect me?

If you cannot open your nostril or both, have recurrent nosebleeds, or keep getting frequent sinus infections, then see a doctor.

If any of this comes off as familiar, you may have a severely deviated septum and should see a doctor for diagnosis and other treatment options.

Severe deviated septum may need deviated septum surgery done by a plastic surgeon.

Potential treatment options
The causes
What makes septum misalign?
  • Birth defects: In some cases, people are born with a deviated septum.
  • Injury or trauma: Nose bumps or injuries can push the septum aside.
The risk factors
What puts you at risk?

A person is likely to experience a deviated septum from birth, as such can occur due to complications that arise during the development stage or with child delivery.

However, most of the cases take place in adulthood as a result of trauma which can raise your nose injury risk, like accidents you may suffer, falls from heights, or car accidents and distortions during risky activities that may push out the septum.

The complications
Healthy Breathing Matters
Can it cause serious problems?
  • Mouth breathing

A blocked nose is also likely to prompt people to breathe through their mouth, which in turn contributes to dry mouth and other issues.

  • Sleep issues

Night breathing problems may cause snoring or noisy breathing, and make sleep apnea worse.

  • Headache

Sinus pressure can be painful in your face or head.

The prevention
Buckle Up, Stay Safe
How can wearing a seatbelt help avoid deviated septum?

Correct and consistent use of a seatbelt while in a vehicle is associated with lower risks of any facial injury from car accidents, including one of the most common fractures, to the nose. There is a risk of injury to the nasal septum, causing it to become deviated as a result of impact from any crash.

Importance of wearing your seatbelt.

This means always, even in the driveway or moving your car across the street, wear that seatbelt. It plays an important part in protecting your nose and other body parts from injury should you make a sudden jolt or get into an accident.

Play Safe, Guard Nose"
How can you protect your nose while playing sports?

Playing sports such as football, soccer or hockey is great exercise but it can also risk trauma to the ear, nose, and throat. So, wearing a face mask or a nose guard can be helpful in preventing trauma and may reduce the possibility of having nasal deviation.

Added precautions to reduce your risk.

To a certain extent, you can avoid nasal injuries which negatively affect your nasal septum by wearing the protective gear, adhering to the safety guidelines and playing safely.

Avoid Risks, Protect Nose
What risky activities should you avoid to protect your nose?

Activities like roughhousing, fast biking, and skateboarding increase the risk of nose injury. Staying away from high-risk activities and using the right safety equipment will help to keep you safe and your nose straight.

Take preventive measures.

Not every unsafe activity results in a broken nose, but they increase the likelihood of accidents. Preventative measures can help in preventing septum injury.
