What are Straight Lashes?

Straight lashes are the type that grow parallel to the eye, rather than curl up or out as we’d like. This can create a lash that looks less thick or that do not make the eyes appear as wide as you would like them to. If you have straight lashes, they may seem a bit more flat, placing a lot less focus on the eyes. Straight, natural lashes may not showcase the eyes to effect, and a lot of people want ways to make their lashes look better.

What Causes Straight Lashes?

Many factors can cause straight lashes such as:

  • Genetics: If you inherited from your mom or dad, the shape and direction of your lashes depends on that one genetic factor of how they are going to grow.
  • Age: As we age, your lashes will lose their curl and become straighter, weaker and thinner.
  • Hormones: Pregnancy, menopause or internal processes can affect the growth and texture of lashes.
  • Health: Some health conditions or medications can interfere with the natural growth cycle of your lashes and produce less curly lashes.

What Do Straight Lashes Look and Feel Like?

  • Straight Growth: Lashes grow out straight or parallel to the lid with little to no curl that will also raise the eye’s appearance.
  • Flat Look: Straight lashes can look flatter/less full compared to more lifted/curled lashes.
  • Feel: Lashes that are straight, they can feel spare or sparse, even forgoing the natural lift that a curled lash tends to maintain.

The symptoms

Visible flatness
Lashes protrude straight out of the eyelid instead of upward curving

Straight lashes tend to look flat and are just straight up and down, with less of a natural bend or lift that comes with a fuller lash. This has the effect of making the eyes look smaller/less open and often, more mascara or curling is required to get the look desired.

Minimal volume
Straight eyelashes can be sparse or not visible

Without the natural swoop that adds volume of straight lashes can appear less full/fuller, which would explain the need for more product or treatments to get that full dramatic lash look.

Lack of lift
Straight lashes will keep you wide-eyed and out of trouble

Straight lashes do not naturally curl upwards, causing the eyes to appear more closed off. This lack of lift can reduce the overall effect that curled lashes typically have in opening the eyes and making them appear larger.

Soft Feels or Weakness
Lashes can become softer or less dense in texture

Straight lashes can be quite fine to the touch too, if they are not full of volume to help keep the them upright. They can also appear to be more delicate and break easier -Curls lashes.

When to see a doctor?
Consultation Is The Key
When to See a Professional About Straight Lashes

Long, straight lashes aren’t a threat to your health, but if you’re after higher-lifted, curlier lashes, or experiencing some discomfort, it might be worth seeing a professional.

Seeking Professional Help for Straight Lashes

Straight lashes are a fact of life, but there are a few eyelash treatments you can do to make them look prettier. At Harley Street Skin Clinic, we provide safe and personal treatments to help give your lashes the lift and curl they desire.

Advised treatments
The causes
What Causes Straight Lashes?

When the natural lash growth direction is more horizontal, or straight, your lashes will not have as much of a curve to them. The genetics factor is strong, of course, but where you are in life, hormonally or healthwise.

The risk factors
What Are the Factors That Lead to Straight Lashes?

The natural curl of one’s eyelashes can be more or less noticeable, especially if you have hereditary influences, vectors for which are your parents, who themselves are vectors when it comes to the growth pattern of lashes. Natural curl in your lashes is also affected by hormonal changes like those experienced during pregnancy or menopause.

The complications
Overall Impact
Understanding Straight Lashes Complications
  • Body Image Issues

If they like their lashes more open-eyed or voluminous, straight ones may actually make them feel less satisfied with their look.

  • Emotional Stress

Straight lashes can be a cause of frustration, especially when you desire a more defined, eye-opening look.

The prevention
Curl-enhancing Strengthener
How does nourishing your lashes help with prevention?

By moisturizing your lashes with natural oils or a documented serum, you’re keeping the hair strong and flexible

Avoid excessive applying mascara use

Heavy and thick mascara can be used in such a way that they are pulling your lashes down, causing them to point downwards.

Regularly curl your lashes using a lash curler

If you have straight lashes you were not born with, falsies and an eyelash curler is a staple tool for achieving a curl and volume. This trick helps to give lashes a more open-eyed appearance, allowing them to appear longer and more pronounced.

Work out regularly

Regular exercise keeps weight in check and tones the skin’s supportive tissue to avoid sudden strains which can result in marks.

Apply lash-enhancing serums

Lash serums include ingredients that are intended to provide nutrients for healthy lash growth and stronger, more curly, and more abundant lashes.
