With over half a million procedures undertaken you're in safe hands
Tired of tired-looking eyes? Never fear, you are certainly not the only one. Darkness and an unfortunate ruching of the skin around the eyes can leave us looking as though we've had one too many late nights. While they may be physically harmless, under-eye bags can feel anything but harmless to our self-esteem. Looking in the mirror, buried in a face which feels aged and unfamiliar is enough to send anyone on a quest for remedies. So, what really is at work here?
Better yet - how can we fix it?
The Science: Under-Eye-Bags Explained
Under-eye bags are a result of underlying tissue structures weakening. Unfortunately, this is a natural part of the ageing process and when the muscles in charge of supporting your eyelids begin to weaken, we see some movement in those structures. This is when skin, fat cells and even muscle tissue may fall and begin to even sometimes accumulate fluid. Hello, puffy swollen eye bags.
While this is a very natural phenomena, there are a few things which can serve to speed up the process somewhat. Some habits which are linked to worsened under-eye bags include: Lots of late nights and subsequent lack of sleep, smoking, fluid retention (particularly first thing in the morning or after a ingesting lots of salt) and undiagnosed or untreated allergies.
Those 'dark circles', however, can actually be caused by the surrounding skin becoming pale (typically due to things such as lack of sleep, poor circulation or vitamin deficiency), meaning that the darker vessels and tissues beneath are more apparent.
While typically harmless, under-eye-bags can be cause for concern if swelling is severe, persistent, painful, irritated or itchy. Consider visiting your GP or ophthalmologist if you experience any of these symptoms to rule out any more serious causes - such as thyroid disease, infection or allergic reaction.
If your under-eye bags are due to an excess of skin, you will often find that skin somewhat protrudes, feels heavy and may even affect your field of vision in extreme cases. Others sometimes spot that cosmetics gather or wear away near the creases of the skin and leave very visible makeup erosion.
Discolouration and pigmentation under the eyes, on the other hand, may appear blue or purple-tinted, making the eyes both look and feel gaunt, lifeless and sunken. But no need to sit and suffer with shadowy sockets - there are many things we can do to bid those unwanted bags adieu...
With a wealth of treatments, designed just for you...
Treatment for under-eye bags isn't always uniform, with many people presenting very different cases. Your first port of call is to assess what it is that is making your eye-bag(s) prominent. Is it a case of excess skin or rather a problem with pigmentation (the darkening of the delicate under-eye skin)? This will tell you how best to combat the problem.
Discolouration responds fantastically to Dermal Filler, lifting the skin just enough to create a brighter under eye. This treatment is extremely delicate and injecting into this area - known as the 'tear trough' - is considered highly specialist. Alternatively, less invasive methods include Pellevé for skin plumping, SmartXide Laser to remove pigmentation and tighten loose skin, and even Skin Care remedies aimed at pigmentation such as delicate bleaching creams and/or plumping lotions to add volume to the under eye.
For more extreme under-eye-bags, there is of course the much-loved surgical treatment known as the Blepharoplasty. This is perfect for skin that has began to sag and ruche, adding weight to the eye and tugging downward. This option provides incredibly restorative results, often stripping years from the face.
