What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?

I have always been fascinated by how the human body works, particularly physiology—how we see, hear, and function on a biological level. Both of my parents were doctors, so medicine was a natural part of my environment growing up. I also loved reading, and as I began exploring medical books, my interest deepened. I found the subject endlessly fascinating, and pursuing a career in medicine felt like a very natural choice for me.

Can you share your educational journey? Where did you complete your medical degree and training?

I completed my medical degree at St George’s Hospital Medical School, which is part of the University of London in Southwest London. It is a highly respected and prestigious institution and remains the largest teaching hospital in South London. I received an excellent medical education there and completed my early clinical training and hospital rotations across a range of specialties.

What attracted you to this particular field of medicine?

During my training, I developed a strong interest in dermatology. I was particularly drawn to the skin because it is the body’s largest organ and acts as a barrier to the outside world. What fascinated me most was how the skin often reflects what is happening internally and can serve as an early warning sign for systemic diseases. That connection between visible signs and underlying health truly captured my interest.

Could you tell us about your experience in different medical settings?

I began my career working in hospital settings, including St George’s Hospital and St Helier Hospital, where I completed rotations in general medicine, surgery, and dermatology. I later trained and worked as a General Practitioner, which gave me a broad and holistic understanding of patient care. Over time, my passion for dermatology grew, and for over a decade now I have worked exclusively in dermatology, primarily in outpatient settings.

How long have you been practicing medicine?

I have been practicing medicine for 23 years.

Have you pursued any additional certifications or specialized training beyond your medical degree?

Yes, I have pursued further specialized training beyond my medical degree. This includes advanced liposuction training at a surgical center in Orlando, Florida, as well as additional training at a specialist center in Egypt, where I further developed my surgical and cosmetic techniques.

Are you a member of any professional medical organizations or societies?

Yes, I am an active member of several professional organizations, including:

  • British Association of Dermatologists (BAD)
  • British Society of Dermatological Surgery (BSDS)
  • British Association of Cosmetic Surgeons (BACS)

Do you participate in continuing medical education (CME) programs?

Absolutely. Continuing medical education is a vital part of my professional practice. I regularly attend courses, workshops, and international training programs, including recent surgical training in the USA and the Middle East. I also remain actively involved in professional dermatology and cosmetic surgery societies to ensure my knowledge remains current.

What is your medical specialty, and why did you choose it?

My medical specialty is Dermatology. I chose this field because it combines diagnostic precision with visible, life-changing outcomes for patients. Dermatology allows me to treat a wide range of conditions while also helping patients regain confidence and quality of life.

Can you describe your specific area of expertise within this specialty?

Within dermatology, my areas of expertise include general and medical dermatology, acne management (including the use of isotretinoin/Roaccutane), skin cancer checks, inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, skin of colour dermatology, genital dermatology, and the use of advanced treatments such as small-molecule and JAK inhibitor therapies. I also have extensive experience in cosmetic and surgical dermatology.

What are the most common conditions or cases you handle in your practice?

I regularly treat conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, alopecia areata, skin cancer and mole concerns, pediatric and adult dermatological conditions, and genital skin disorders. Acne, particularly severe and scarring acne, forms a significant part of my clinical work.

How do you stay updated with the latest advancements and research in your specialty?

I stay up to date by regularly reading journals from the British Association of Dermatologists and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV). I also maintain close professional relationships with dermatologists in the United States, where many advances in dermatological treatments and research originate. Continuous learning is essential in a rapidly evolving specialty like dermatology.

With experience spanning thousands of patients, Dr Basu has particular interests in acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, vitiligo, children's skin conditions and aesthetic procedures such as botox, dermal fillers and PRP.
