With over half a million procedures undertaken you're in safe hands
Suffering a burn, regardless of its severity or how it occurred, is always a traumatic experience. From mild to severe, burns can be extremely painful and cause anything from minor swelling to uneven skin texture and - in extreme cases - permanent and severe discolouration.
Fortunately, all is not lost. Scarring is a visible consequence of trauma to the skin, but it certainly isn’t one that you have to live with. Physical pain, self-consciousness and psychological trauma can become things of the past if you only know how to aid the body's recovery correctly.
With the right tools and know-how, we can help restore the vital components needed for healthy new skin cells to form, and burns to be all but eradicated. That's because, at Harley Street Skin, we take the time to assess the burn and decide on the best route to combatting any of those pesky symptoms long-term.
Getting to the Bottom of Burns
As expected, a burn is sustained trauma to the skin through heat. Burns are typically sustained through dry heat - such as a run-in with an open flame or a frying pan - whereas scalds are more commonly associated with wet injury - such as steam, vapour or hot water. Depending on how deep down into the skin the damage has reached, burns are given a classification of 1-3: First-degree, second-degree, and third-degree burns.
First-degree burns are the least severe minor of the three and also the most common, damaging only the outer layer of skin (the epidermis). These burns inflame the skin, causing some redness and mild swelling but typically nothing that causes any long-term scarring. Skin will, however, be tender to the touch, yet only superficial damage sustained.
Second-Degree Burns delve a little deeper and cause damage to the dermis: the thicker layer of skin beneath the epidermis. This type of burn includes symptoms of first-degree burns as well as moderate to severe blistering. These burns result not only take far longer to heal but cause damage to vital proteins and connective tissues - such as our youthful collagen bonds.
Third-Degree Burns penetrate through all three of the layers - the third being the subcutaneous tissue. This burn is the most severe, although contrary to common belief, can sometimes be somewhat painless as nerve and blood vessels are too damaged to inform pain receptors. These burns frequently cause obtrusive and long-standing scarring such as changes to both skin colour and texture.
With a wealth of treatments, designed just for you...
At Harley Street Skin, treatment may involve anything from lasers to chemical peeling agents - depending on what is best for particular skin type. Smartxide Laser is a treatment that targets and recovers lost collagen, flaking away any burnt skin with a precision laser. Targeting damaged layers might seem counterintuitive, but by breaking down the layers, the skin cells are stimulated and begin to redevelop, creating fresh cells in the wake of the old ones. Cosmetically, this can have drastic impacts on all different kinds of scar tissue.
Alternatively, you may wish to turn to Regenera - a hyper-advanced method of reviving exisiting tissues by placing healthy cells onto the affected area, or ReCell: a skin-grafting treatment administered using a spraying technique. Both of these options can relieve discomfort (and treatment-anxiety) as it provides successful results for deep-burns entirely non-invasively.
You may also consider significantly improving the surface of the skin using Chemical Peels (light, medium and deep depending on the severity of the burn). These are a go-to treatment for improving the appearance of larger areas of skin, helping to even tone and correct pigmentation. It is a non-invasive treatment often recommended for many types of scarring. Pair any of these treatments with a robust regenerating lotion and burns will soon be a thing of the past - your past.
