With over half a million procedures undertaken you're in safe hands
You can forget the sleek riding boots; no strappy sandal, form-fitting boot or ankle-strapped stiletto looks quite as elegant beneath the cankle. There are certain styles that are just a no-go, right? We're advised time and time again to just conceal said cankle with, say, a longer trouser or maxi dress.
In fact, often we're taught to merely disguise features we're unhappy with. Contour a larger nose, wear vertical stripes to appear slimmer... it's all about illusion. But what if you want to feel uninhibited all the time? What if you didn't actually have to be prevented from wearing the dainty shoes of your dreams...?
Genetic or Environmental?
'Cankles' are formed from a build-up of fatty tissue around the lower leg and ankle, the word 'cankle' being a combination of the words calf and ankle. The term specifically refers to the area where the calf meets the foot, although sufferers can find that problems with fat distribution carry on further up the leg. Cankles are marked by a severe lack of definition between the leg and the ankle, with the area appearing puffy, swollen or disproportionate.
This uneven weight distribution is often, unfortunately, caused by genetics and more commonly affects those who carry their weight on their bottom half - i.e. our pear-shaped ladies and gentlemen. Those who find they are more likely to gain weight around the rear, thighs and legs as opposed to their bust, tummies and upper bodies often can find that cankles become (or have always been) a problem.
Cankles can sometimes be a result of swelling due to a poor or limited diet. Diets that are particularly high in sodium can cause water retention, meaning that puffiness and bloating occurs in multiple places across the body. When this is the case, some begin to note it more in the ankle area due to its ability to affect the overall shape and contour of the leg.
Some people may also notice ankle swelling after long periods of immobility - for instance a long flight or car journey, or after taking certain medications such as selected antidepressants, contraceptives or blood pressure tablets. These cankles are instead caused by tissue inflammation rather than a surplus of fat and unfortunately cannot be treated with surgery.
Similarly, weight-gain also plays a crucial role in the cankle arena, which is why many pregnant women tend to suffer with them. This inflammation can be a result of hormone fluctuation or even poor circulation. Luckily, cankles associated with pregnancy tend to subside when weight returns to normal. Those that don't need not panic though, we have just the treatment…
With a wealth of treatments, designed just for you...
Exercises such as yoga and pilates, as well as targeted exercises like leg raises and squats can provide slight improvements to the definition of the ankle and lower leg. Having said this, these improvements are often minute and cannot correct the larger problem at hand - your body's natural fat distribution.
One of the simplest and easiest ways to remove that localised fat permanently is through BodyTite. BodyTite is a breakthrough body contouring procedure that reduces stubborn fat whilst simultaneously tightening and firming the skin. It is a far more advanced form of liposuction, created to provide a less invasive method of fat removal with significantly less downtime. If excess fat is the problem, Bodytite can help create a far more shapely lower leg and completely eradicate the symptoms of the dreaded cankle.
Unlike traditional liposuction, this process involves inserting a small fibre-optic laser under the skin to break down unwanted fat cells. The fat is then removed gently through a minute incision, whilst having a knock-on effect on our natural production of collagen. As a result, BodyTite leaves skin far tighter and smooth in appearance. Permanently.
