With over half a million procedures undertaken, you're in safe hands
Whether it's a large red laceration right across the chest, the aftermath of some aggressive acne, or even just a minute, skin-toned indentation somewhere only you know about; scarring can really affect a person psychologically.
They can be painful reminders of accidents from the past, huge focus-pullers or just all-round sources of self-consciousness. However, while scarring is inevitable, and all of us will experience it to some degree during our lives, it certainly is not something that you have to suffer with. Certainly not in this day and age!
Skin Knowledge is Power...
Most people are able to recognise scar tissue fairly easily, and you probably don't need us to explain what a scar actuallyis, although if you do, 'scarring' refers to any patch or portion of skin that is marked permanently from injury. Each and every scar, at its most basic, is fallout from some type of injury or wound.
Scarring typically causes discoloration; as well as changes in skin texture and sensitivity, sometimes creating pits or protrusions in or on the skin. This is caused by the body's instinctual healing response forming new collagen fibres to compensate for the damage done to the dermis. Because it is new tissue, it often does not blend seamlessly with the surrounding tissue.
There are various types of scarring, some more difficult to treat than others. Some variations that you might encounter are:
Atrophic scarring - these scars are the kind that leave indentations and are usually a result of superficial damage such as chicken pox or cystic acne. Its name comes from the word atrophy meaning the 'degradation of cells'. This appears when damage is done to the fat, muscle or collagen cells beneath the skin's surface and there is significant tissue loss as a result.
Hypertrophic scarring - this occurs during the healing process as a result of collagen building up, and causes the tissue around the wound to thicken significantly. As a result, these scars become raised; pink, red or purple in colour; and often itchy or painful. Often this type of scarring is associated with surgery, cuts, burns or deep punctures such as infected piercings.
Keloid scarring - Although raised, like hypertrophic scarring, keloid scars are much larger, and can even grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound. Keloids can be extremely uncomfortable and cause a sensation of tightness, sometimes limiting your range of motion if in areas such as the knee, ankle or elbow. They are also known to cause itchiness and pain.
With a wealth of treatments, designed just for you...
Treatment will depend very much so on the type of scarring you are faced with.
Typically, scarring caused by things such as acne, insects bites, chickenpox or piercings can be drastically improved by counteracting volume loss from beneath the skin's surface. As a result of this, carefully placed Dermal Filler, or Transferred Fat can help to level out the skin surrounding the scar tissue, working as a substitute for any of the lost tissue.
More widespread scarring such as acne and chickenpox scarring also responds fantastically to treatment geared at breaking down surface tissue and stimulating the growth of new cells; things such as Chemical Peels, Recell, IPL, Derma Roller and Microdermabrasion.
Certain more distinct scars (such as those caused by surgery, sports injury, self harm or burn injury) may also be treated with more targeted precision, such as the SmartXide Laser or, on occasion, anti-inflammatory steroid injections known as Kenalog Injections.
