What is Belly Button Surgery (Umbilicoplasty)?

Belly Button Surgery

Navel, or umbilicus, surgery is an aesthetic procedure that specifically addresses the appearance of the navel. It’s great for people who are dissatisfied with their navel because of genetics, pregnancy, hernias, piercings, or previous surgeries.

This simple operation is often performed under local anaesthetic. It means excising excess skin or narrow the slit for a tanner, more symmetrical or vertical look.

Umbilicoplasty, as compared to tummy tuck, is localized and less invasive, with the potential for quicker recovery and shorter downtime.

The Benefits of Umbilicoplasty

  • Shapes the belly button to be more reserved.
  • Restores symmetry following weight loss or pregnancy.
  • Adds confidence in swimwear or wearing under fitted garments.
  • Little to no visible scarring, frequently concealed beneath the crease of the navel.
  • Faster recovery than full abdominal operations.
  • Suitable for men and women both.

Best for

Surgical Umbilicoplasty
Excess skin is removed or the opening of the navel is reformed

This is the typical type of belly button surgery. With the help of tiny incisions, surgeon once again shifts or modifies the navel. The process is irreversible and tailored to the look you want.

Classification: Invasive.

Downtime: 5 – 10 Days.

Best for: Long or protruding or dangling navels.

Umbilical Revision (Post-Surgery Correction)
Corrects previous procedures or piercing

A common pick after a C-section or hernia repair. This technique is able to correct asymmetry of nipple or scarring, for recovery of natural form.

Classification: Invasive.

Downtime: 7 – 14 Days.

Best for: Scars and distortion, history of surgery, or in/out belly buttons.

The procedure
Umbilicoplasty Procedure Steps
How does umbilicoplasty work?

The surgeon cuts out extra skin or tissue around the belly button and trims the edges. The stitches are done both inside and out and are usually in the natural line of the navel.

Pain And Comfort
Will it hurt?

You also won’t experience any pain, although you might feel some pressure. Post operative pain is generally minimal and can be managed with over the counter pain medication.

Procedure Timeframe
How long does it take?

Most procedures take less than an hour. You should be able to go home the same day.

Ideal Treatment Age
What age is ideal?

It may be a good option for anyone over 18 whose abdomen is fully developed. There is no maximum age, as long as one is healthy enough.

Combination Treatment Options
Can I combine it with other treatments?

Yes, in fact many combine it with liposuction or skin tightening for even better results. Just space them out safely.

Post-Treatment Clothing Guide
Can I wear tight clothing after?

Don’t put anything compressive on for a week. Then you can dress uninhibitedly particularly, with a more spacious waistline.

Repeat Treatment Timing
When can I have another treatment?

Secondary umbilicoplasty is uncommon, but feasible. Surgeons typically wait 6 to 12 months before determining whether another tweak is in order.

Maintaining Your Results
How to maintain results?

Do not pick, scratch or otherwise irritate the skin as it heals. Continue post-op care and sunscreen on your midsection with exposure. With your habits, the results are permanent.

Treatment Combination Guide
Can I do other treatments at the same time?

Yes — some patients elect to do so in addition to liposuction or stretch mark treatments for complete contouring. Just space them out so you don’t get too much at once.

The essentials

  • Avoid Blood Thinners and Smokin: Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or any blood-thinning supplements (unless prescribed). If you smoke, healing is delayed and risks of complications are greater.
  • Begin a mild Skincar: Do not apply any exfoliants, scrubs, or strong creams to the stomach for one week preoperatively. Use mild, fragrance-free products to help keep skin soothed and intact for optimal healing.
  • Make Time for Recover: Plan on 7–10 days of no heavy lifting, strenuous activity, work or tight clothing across your midsection. The more restful and stress-free the treatment, the better the results will be.
  • Consult Your Surgeon Thoroughly: Talk to your surgeon about your medical history and your surgical plan, including what you hope to achieve with surgery. If necessary, bring in pictures of what you want, but be open to your surgeon’s advice on what will work the best for your body.

  • Post-Treatment Swelling and Redness: The navel will appear swollen, tight or slightly bruised for up to the first week. After three days, the bruising should disappear and is nothing to worry about.
  • Avoid Touching the Treated Area: For at least 48 hours, or longer if possible, don’t fiddle with, press, or put pressure on the belly button. Even small disturbances can disrupt the fragile healing process.
  • Hydrate and Use Saline Spray (if prescribed): Drink plenty of fluids to support tissue repair. If your surgeon recommends a saline solution or ointment for the area, apply only as directed—never more.
  • Skip Skincare Near the Navel: Do not apply lotions, creams, or oils near the incision for 7–10 days. Allow the skin to heal on its own without additional agents that could cause more irritation or prolong the healing process.
  • Clean the Area Gently: If cleaning is necessary, clean around the belly button with a clean, damp cloth. Pat gently with a clean towel — never rub. If you have crusting or scabbing, your surgeon will probably have you use a topical treatment or soak the area in saline.

  • Be Patient With Changes: The early results are present, but full healing of the belly button will occur over a few months as the swelling decreases.
  • Protect Your Belly From Impact: No tight waistbands, banging into counters, lifting heavy objects which may strain the area. Healing persists under the skin long after it looks pasty.
  • Sleep Smart: Sleep on your back with pillows propping your body up. Do not sleep on your stomach or sides as to not put pressure on the healing lip.
  • Skip Excess Skincare: A mild, non-exfoliating product is the only thing that should ever go on your belly, and slather on sunscreen if you expose your belly. Too much sun exposure can also slow the healing process or cause pigmentation changes.
  • Stick to Your Check-Ups: Keep all follow-up appointments, even if you feel well. Your surgeon monitors your healing and may even stabilize or remove the dressings on your surgical site at your follow-up appointment.

Why Choose Umbilicoplasty?
Refined Belly Button
Smoothed, Sculpted Navel

You don’t have to change your entire body to feel more comfortable in your skin. Occasionally, a subtle tweak, such as recontouring the belly button, can restore a feeling of security and comfort.

Target Issues
Flatter, Firmer Look
  • Sagging or stretched belly buttons from pregnancy or weight loss
  • Outward or protruding belly buttons that detract from your form
  • Old piercing, hernia-repair, or surgical scars
  • Asymmetric or irregularly shaped navel that is out of the ordinary
Before & afters

Recovery timeline
1 - 2 Days

You can experience light cramps or feel tender and swollen around your belly button.

  • Do not bend or stretch or wear anything that restricts pressure on your midsection.
  • Keep the area clean and dry, resting in a semi-upright position.
6 - 7 Days

Swelling and surface bruising should be starting to subside.

  • You can come back to your doctors office for dressings or post-check-up.
  • There may still be pulling or tenderness; however, movement becomes less challenging.
1 - 2 Weeks

Pain starts to be less noticeable, and the belly button is starting to accept its new shape. Light activities may resume once approved by your surgeon.

1 Month

The area appears more refined and calmed, though there’s still plenty of healing taking place beneath the surface.

  • Avoid tight clothes and use SPF if wearing open to the elements.
  • The majority of patients have no limitations and may return to normal activities.
3 - 6 Months

End results are apparent as the tissue completely heals and adapts.

  • Minor changes in shape may occur, but they are not drastic.
  • Your surgeon will decide if further treatment or follow-up is required.
The benefits

  • Cleaner Navel Contour: Whether you’re tucking, rounding or tightening stretched skin, the shape of your belly button will become more streamlined thanks to umbilicoplasty. It enhances the way the area looks without doing a full tummy procedure.
  • Firmer Looking Mid Section: When the belly button has a more balanced look, the happier we are with our waist and lower torso–especially in swimwear, fitted garments or when taking photos.
  • Stunningly Realistic Results: We aren’t trying to make your belly button look “done”, we just want it to look like it belongs where it’s supposed to. Its visible to you but not so much to others.
  • Less Recovery Time: Since umbilicoplasty only addresses a small area and doesn’t include muscle tightening or sizable incisions, recovery is faster and easier compared to bigger body contouring surgeries.

  • Tighter, Smoother Look: After swelling subsides, the belly button looks cleaner and sharper especially when standing or wearing crop tops or tight clothing.
  • Reshaped Once Again: Whether stretched out from pregnancy or pulled by – scars or piercings, an umbilicoplasty once again shapes the belly button so that it fits the contours of your body.
  • Minimal but Effective: This isn’t loud or noticeable most won’t know a thing was done. They’ll just think your waist looks more in proportion.
  • Lasting Outcome: The results are lasting because the changes to your skin and tissue are substantial and continue to hold against the passage of time, especially if you can maintain your weight and follow the aftercare.

  • No full-body work, no hospital visit: Just one simple tweak, one more reason to be comfortable.
  • Increased Body Confidence: Patients will often tell us they feel more comfortable when they put on a swimsuit or photograph themselves or even just when they look in the mirror.
  • Shaped for Your Body: This isn’t about following a trend, it’s about making your belly button fit your body wonderfully, in the most natural way.

Am I suitable?
Is Umbilicoplasty good for me?

Any patient with a belly button that is elongated, protruding, or irregular in shape and who has relatively good skin quality of the abdomen would be a good knew candidate. A detailed consultation will be necessary to examine your current anatomy and determine the specific surgical approach necessary to achieve your ideal results.

The Risk
What are the usual and adverse side effects?

Possible risks

Just like any cosmetic surgery, there are a few risks of belly button surgery. These may include:

Usual Side Effects:

  • Bruising: Bruising at the belly button is frequent and can take one week to resolve.
  • Swelling: Some swelling is normal and generally resolves after a few days.
  • Tightness: You may experience tightness in the area you had treated, and potential soreness as skin accommodates to the healing process.
  • Adverse Effects: It’s rare, but the following complications can be possible.
  • Infection: Just like any surgeries, there will be infection risk if post-op care is not properly followed.
  • Scars: Although incisions are discreet, this does not exempt them to be seen at some point.
  • Asymmetry: There are a few cases where the navel doesn’t heal properly and needs a revision or touch-up surgery.

These risks are minimized when you select a qualified surgeon with experience, somebody who is dedicated to the successful and safe outcome of the procedure.
