What is Eye Cyst Removal?

Personalised Skin Investment

How does Eye Cyst Removal work?

Eye cyst removal or eyelid cyst removal is a simple procedure undertaken to remove a blocked or inflamed gland such as a chalazion or meibomian cyst from the eyelid. These can result from oil glands that become clogged and inflamed, forming a hard lump under the skin that is typically painless to the touch.

It can be carried out under local anaesthetic. An incision is created on the inner eyelid, through which the cyst contents are drained and the capsule if necessary, is taken out. Stitches are generally not required and the scar is concealed in the lid.

This is performed as an outpatient and takes 20–30 min. The vast majority of patients can go home the same day.

The Benefits of Eye Cyst Removal:

  • Instant soothing relief of pressure or soreness of the eyelids.
  • Eliminates the appearance of visible swelling or dissatisfaction on the treated area.
  • Minimal, if any, visible scars.
  • Reduces risk of recurrence.
  • Fast recovery with low risk of complications.

Best for

Chalazion (Meibomian Cyst)
A Cosmetic cyst due to blocked gland inside the eyelid

Chalazion are firm non-tender nodules and frequently follow internal inflammation of the meibomian glands. If not treated they will grow or can become sore. They are removed by a minor surgery through a tiny incision on the inside of the eyelid in order to evacuate its contents.

Classification: Non-invasive.

Downtime: 1 – 3 days.

Best for: Stubborn eyelid bumps that have not improved with warm compresses.

Sebaceous Cyst
Develops when a sebaceous gland becomes blocked

These cysts are filled with sebaceous material and can as well gradually enlarge. They should be removed surgically if they increase in size, become symptomatic, or for cosmetic purposes.

Classification: Invasive.

Downtime: 3 – 5 days.

Best for: Cysts that are visible or growing on the eyelid surface or near it.

Epidermal Inclusion Cyst
A slow-growing bump under the skin resulting from trapped skin cells.

These are growths that can be benign and endeavour to become mobile or rubbery below the skin. Excision of both the cyst and its wall is performed to prevent recurrence.

Classification: Minimally invasive.

Downtime: 2 – 4 days.

Best for: Painless, well-established lumps beneath or adjacent to the eyelid.

The procedure
Gentle Cyst Removal
How does eye cyst removal work?

Eye cyst removal is a minor procedure during which the cyst (usually a chalazion) is removed or drained through a small cut. The incision is usually placed on the underside of the eyelid to minimize visible scarring. The cystic contents are aspirated and in some cases, the cyst wall is excised to prevent recurrence.

Comfortably Pain-Free
Will it hurt?

The operation is performed under local anesthesia. You’ll be conscious, but the eyelid will be totally numb. The majority of patients experience only a gentle pressure with no pain throughout the process. There is typically only mild discomfort afterwards, which goes away in a day or two.

Quick, Hassle-Free
How long does it take?

It usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes. It is done in a treatment room, not an operating theater, and you can go home not long after.

All Ages Welcome
What age is ideal?

There isn’t an age limit per se, though eye cyst removal is most frequently done in adults and older teenagers. Kids may be treated too, especially if the cyst is big, keeps coming back or is causing vision problems but under general anesthesia when it comes to the little ones.

Heal Before Enhancing
Can I combine it with other treatments?

Not on the same day. The delicate eye region should be allowed to heal. You should not think about any other eyelid or facial treatments like blepharoplasty, laser treatments or injectables until the area has healed completely and your doctor has given you the all clear.

Pause To Heal
Can I put makeup on or my contacts in afterwards?

You’ll probably want to avoid both for at least 5 to 7 days, or until your doctor gives you the all-clear. This lowers the chance of infection and allows the eyelid to heal correctly.

Wait, Then Treat
When can I have another treatment?

If a second cyst forms, your doctor may suggest waiting at least 4 weeks and then considering another removal. If you have unrelated treatment plans for the area around your eyes, dry-eye disease and other tear-related dysfunction is one of the few conditions that might be worsened by these injections, most do not need to wait any longer than 1–2 weeks after healing.

Healthy Eye Habits
How to maintain results?

Apply warm compresses at the first sign of inflammation, engage in daily eyelid hygiene, refrain from rubbing your eyes, and throw away old or expired eye makeup. Your doctor may also suggest lid cleaning solutions or oral antibiotics for people who get chalazion often.

Separate For Safety
Can I do other treatments at the same time?

An eye cyst should be removed as a separate procedure. It’s not something that is recommended with other treatments, because you want to heal absolutely completely without adding any additional irritant to that eyelid.

The price
Personalised Skin Investment
How much does Eye Cyst Removal cost?

The price of eye cyst removal London generally falls between £250 and £750 and will dependere upon such considerations as the kind of cyst, the complexity of removal, if histology (lab testing) is asked for along with the practitioner’s experience.

Some clinics in Harley Street, Chelsea or Mayfair charge more as a result of service, aftercare and consultant fees. This excludes areas like Islington or Shoreditch, where pricing can again be broadly similar but might start at the lower end, particularly for a straightforward chalazion removal without requiring any additional intervention.

If you have many cysts, need general anaesthetic, or want treatments combined, the price may be higher. If you want to get an accurate, individual quote, the best way to go about this is to arrange a consultation so that your cyst can be examined in person, and you can be given a recommendation as to your treatment plan.

£250

The essentials

  • Understand the Procedure: Eye cyst removal is the removal of a cyst causing discomfort and that does not go away after treatment. The operation is relatively minor and is usually performed under local anaesthesia. Your physician will determine whether the cyst is the type that can be drained or if it should be removed.
  • Pause Blood Thinners if Advised: If you take blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, or blood thinning medication, you’ll get instructions to stop them 5-7 days before the procedure if medically advised. Consult your doctor for medical advice before making changes.
  • Come Without Contacts or Eye Makeup: Do not wear eye makeup, lotions, or creams around the eyes the day of the procedure. Take contact lenses out beforehand, and wear glasses. This minimizes the potential risk of infection and allows optimal visual field during surgery.
  • Dress for Comfort: Dress comfortably in a shirt with a loose neckline or front zipper that can easily be pulled down. Steer clear of any garments that go on over the head to avoid accidental pressure on the eye after treatment.
  • Consult Your Surgeon Thoroughly: At your appointment, your provider will verify the diagnosis, inspect the cyst, discuss the type of removal, any risks, aftercare, and the likelihood of it returning. Medical examination may be conducted post-excision in some instances.

  • Post-Treatment Swelling and Redness: You may experience mild swelling, tenderness or bruising around the eyelid for 2 to 5 days. During the first 24 hours, a cold pack can be placed across the closed eye for a 10-minute break.
  • Avoid Touching the Treated Area: You might be given ointment or drops by your clinician. Avoid touching, rubbing or applying makeup to the treated area until completely healed (5-7 days).
  • Do not wear contact lenses, and avoid strenuous activity: It is recommended that you do not use contact lenses until the cornea is fully healed and you are otherwise released by the clinician. Refrain from getting wet by sweating, taking a swim or exposure to dust or smoke in a week.
  • Follow Post-Treatment Instructions: Take all medications as prescribed. Keep an eye out for signs of infection like increasing redness and pain, or any kind of discharge and get in touch with your clinic if they do.
  • Attend Your Follow-Up: A follow-up is usually arranged for review one or 2 weeks later. Your physician will evaluate the healing and remove any dressing if used and give you instructions on when normal activities can be resumed.

  • Practice Daily Eyelid Hygiene: Apply warm compresses consistently, especially if you’ve experienced repeated cysts. Clean the eyelid edges with a warm washcloth or lid-cleansing solution to keep oil glands clear.
  • Replace Eye Products Regularly: Old or dirty mascara, eyeliner, and eye creams can also lead to clogged glands. Swap them out every 3 to 6 months.
  • Don’t Rub or Squeeze: Don’t rub your eyes or try to pop a cyst on your own, which could cause infection or scarring. If you notice a lump, always consult a doctor.
  • Manage Underlying Conditions: If you have blepharitis, dry eyes or a condition affecting your meibomian glands, your health care provider may recommend continuing treatment or hygiene measures to prevent you from developing styes in the future.
  • Don’t Skip Check-Ins: If cysts keep coming back, your GP or eye specialist will check for underlying causes or refer you to a specialist for further treatment.

Why Choose Eye Cyst Removal?
Clear, Comfortable Vision
Experience Comfort & Clarity

Eye Cyst removal is a safe and effective solution that eliminates both the physical and cosmetic problem. Whether your cyst is creating pressure, interfering with vision, having it removed can bring speedy relief and restore comfort to your day-to-day life.

Target Issues
Comfort. Balance. Relief.
  • Persistent eyelid lumps

Most cysts, particularly chalazions, go away on their own, but some do not. When a bump lingers for weeks, grows bigger, or starts to interfere with blinking or sight, removing it is usually the safest next move.

  • Recurring cysts in the same area

For some people, one area can have recurrent cysts caused by blocked glands. The cyst and its lining can be surgically removed to decrease the chance of recurrence as well as enable the tissue to heal.

  • Cosmetic or visible swelling

Even if a cyst is painless, it can cause unevenness or swelling that’s hard to ignore especially in photographs or face-to-face interactions. Removal restores a smooth lid contour and improves appearance without scarring.

Relief Without Risk
Tiny Tweak, Big Impact

This is a good decision for people who are looking to solve a problem, not change their appearance. It’s a low risk, low downtime procedure that can provide immediate relief. Whether you want to get comfortable, or you want confidence and security in your appearance and health, getting an eye cyst removed is easy and with minimal downtime.

Before & afters

Recovery timeline
1 – 2 Days

There may be some puffiness, redness or possibly even bruising of the eyelid. It is normal that the area has a feeling of tightness or pressure.

  • Apply cold compresses lightly against the closed eye to help the swelling go down (10 minutes at a time, repeated several times each day).
  • Do not rub the eye or apply pressure to it.
  • Continue to clean the eyelid and keep it dry and follow any instructions about ointment or drops.
6 – 7 Days

Swelling should also start to subside, and any minor bruising will fade.

  • You might be required to attend a post-op review to confirm that the incision site isn't leaking or infected.
  • The rest of the pain by now really should be low and tolerable without medications.
1 – 2 Weeks

The eyelid is still on the mend and the region should look and feel much improved.

  • You can typically start wearing contact lenses and light eye makeup again a few days after your clinician clears you.
  • Do not overexert or swim in this mode or be in smoke or dust
1 Month

There might be some residuals sensitivity or redness that would go away.

  • Typically, the upper eyelid by now looks soft and natural as well.
3 – 6 Months

Long-term healing is complete.

  • The tissue will have fully settled, and recurrence is unlikely if the cyst wall was entirely removed.
  • If you are prone to recurring cysts, your clinician may recommend a long-term lid hygiene routine.
The benefits
Quick Relief from Irritation

Specializing in eye cyst removal, when done by an experienced specialist this treatment has the capacity to dramatically alleviate symptoms of pressure, swelling or obscured vision in resolution of normal eyelid function just a matter of days.

  • Improved Appearance of the Eyelid: When a cyst becomes visible, your eyelid may appear puffy, asymmetric, or swell. Removal restores a flatter, more uniform eyelid, and there is no impact on the natural shape of your eye.
  • Minimal Scarring and Discreet Results: Most procedures are done through the inside of the eyelid, leaving no visible external scar. The incision is small, heals fast, and usually goes unnoticed.
  • Faster Healing and Return to Routine: Recovery is typically quick. Most patients are back to their everyday activities the next day, while any swelling or bruising typically fade within a week — no work- or social-life downtime required.
  • Reduced Risk of Recurrence: If the cyst capsule is fully removed the likelihood of it returning in the same spot is significantly reduced, especially when paired with proper eyelid hygiene.

Natural-Looking Outcome

The idea is not to alter how you appear, but simply to take off what shouldn’t be on your face. Patients usually feel that the newly formed eyelid looks even and natural, and there are no traces of an operation.

  • No More Persistent Lumps: If a cyst has been sticking around for weeks, even if it’s small, or won’t stop coming back, removing it prevents recurring cycles of swelling, pain and flare-ups. The result is a more relaxed, healthy looking lid area.
  • Feel More at Ease: Most patients are now more comfortable in photos, video calls or conversations in person once the lump is gone especially if the cyst had been something visible.
  • Lasting Results with Simple Care: Healing time is minimal, and the results are permanent. With good eye care and lid hygiene, most people never see another cyst develop in the same location.

Small Procedure, Big Impact

Eye cyst removal is a quick walk-in treatment under local anaesthetic that can help your eye feel more comfortable and look better. All without the need for hospital admission or a long recovery period.

  • Restore Normal, Day-to-Day Comfort: Patients often say they no longer feel self-conscious or irritated when the cyst is removed. As a result, the shift is functional and visible, everything from greater sight to better eyelid movement.
  • Tailored to Your Eyelid: Each cyst is evaluated on its own, and treatment depends on size, position and effects. The treatment is conservative, exact and aimed at maintaining your eyelid’s natural characteristics.

Am I suitable?
Is Eye Cyst Removal Right for Me?
  • Eye cyst removal may be appropriate if you have a bump on your eyelid that is not going away, and is a chalazion, which is not resolving with warm presses or conservative care. It is also appropriate if the cyst is affecting your vision, causing discomfort or changing the appearance of your eyelid.
  • For those seeking removal for comfort, function or cosmetic reasons, minor surgical removal is a safe and effective option for most adults and older teens. Your doctor will evaluate the cyst’s type, size and location to ensure it is appropriate for treatment.
The risks
What are the usual and adverse side effects?

Like many minor surgeries, there are still risks, but complications of eye cyst removal are rare, especially in the hands of a skilled practitioner. It is considered a low-risk procedure, and is usually done on an out-patient basis in a hospital or clinic under local anesthesia.

Usual Side Effects

  • Bruises: It is normal to have minor bruising around the eyes, which will typically resolve within a few days.
  • Swelling: Swelling is temporary, usually at its peak 48 hours and resolves within.
  • Discomfort: You may experience some tenderness, pressure, or itching for the first 1-3 days, but it’s generally mild.
  • Tearing: Could experience mild tearing in the first week of healing.

Adverse Effects

Although rare, the following complications may occur:

  • Infection: Rare, but if aftercare is not carried out infection can occur. Your doctor may also recommend an antibiotic ointment as a precaution.
  • Scars: Generally, the incision is within the eyelid so there is no visible scar. Though very small, an occasional bump or surface mark may occur.
  • Recurrence: There is a small risk that the cyst will regrow in the same area if the cyst capsule is not removed in its entirety.
  • Bleed or Irritation: There can be minimal bleeding or temporary eye irritation within the first day, however this will resolve soon.

When you select an experienced medical professional, you’ll lower your chances and guarantee the safest results as well as a quick recovery time and little impact to your everyday life.
