What is a fat transfer to the body?

Sculpt And Restore The Body

How can unwanted fats be used for body improvements?

Do you know that the excess fat in your body can be used in different parts of your body that you want to enhance? The process is known as fat transfer, also referred to as fat grafting. It is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure wherein the unwanted fat is removed using liposuction and transferred to another area via injections.

Benefits:

  • Enhance the shape and size of your buttocks
  • Improve the shape and size of your breasts
  • Reconstruct the breast after breast cancer or injury
  • Reduced wrinkles on your hands.

The many types

Fat transfer to breasts

Fat is transferred to the breasts for size and shape improvement. Some women prefer this treatment because of its natural outcomes.

Fat transfer to buttocks (Brazilian Butt Lift)

Fat from the donor site is transferred to the buttocks for added shape and volume.

Fat transfer to hands

Use to restore volume loss in hands primarily due to ageing. It helps improve the appearance of the tendons, veins, and thin skin.

The procedure
Fat Transfer Process
How does fat transfer to the body work?

A fat transfer to the body is a cosmetic surgery where your surgeon will remove unwanted fat and use it to make your buttocks, breasts, or hips more prominent. The treatment consists of three steps:

  • Liposuction: sucking out fat tissue from the donor site (like the abdomen or thighs)
  • Purification: The extracted fat is purified to remove the unwanted elements.
  • Injecting: carefully injecting the purified fat into the target area to achieve the desired volume and shape.

Although the body naturally takes back some of the fat, the fat that sticks to the treated area stays permanently and gives the desired long-lasting effect.

The Key Steps
What can I expect during the treatment?

A patient’s surgeon uses liposuction to take out fat from places where the patient has too much, like the abdomen or thighs. After that, the fat is processed to separate good fat from any fluid or particles present. After all the preparation, the fat is delicately put into the area being treated to increase its shape and size. Anaesthesia is administered, and the procedure usually takes a few hours from start to finish. Most patients experience mild swelling and discomfort after surgery, which is normal, and they can generally go home the same day with instructions for recovery.

Recovery Time Guide
How long is the recovery?

Most patients can carry on with their usual activities within 1 to 2 weeks. Bruising appears because of the needle used, but normally resolves itself as time passes. Full results often take a few months to appear.

Safety And Comfortability
Is it painful?

Patients often feel some discomfort after an autologous fat grafting, especially where the fat is removed and where it is transferred. The sensation is often described as the tenderness you get after exercise or mild bruising by the patient. Local anaesthesia, sedation, or general anaesthesia will be used during the procedure so that you feel no pain.

Is it safe?

It is generally safe to have a fat transfer surgery as it is a minimally invasive procedure, especially when an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon does it. As fat from your own body is used, it’s unlikely to cause an allergic reaction or rejection.

Just as with all surgery, there are dangers such as infections, swelling, or bruising, uneven results, fat reabsorption, and sometimes, fat embolism.

Undergoing surgery safely depends on picking a surgeon who knows what to do and uses the correct safety procedures.

Multiple Treatments Needed
Can I combine fat transfer with other procedures?

Combining it with liposuction, tummy tuck, or breast surgery is common for patients who want more impressive outcomes.

Can I have another fat transfer in the same location if I am not satisfied?

If you are still not satisfied with the first outcome, you can get another fat transfer procedure to the same location. Since a lot of the fat is absorbed by the body, many patients have to come in for another session to achieve their desired results.
It is usually recommended by your surgeon to wait 3 to 6 months before scheduling another operation. The waiting helps reduce swelling, so your doctor can picture the outcome and determine what other changes are necessary.

Post-Treatment Guidelines
When should I see a doctor after a fat transfer?

You must remember to go to all your scheduled follow-up visits after a fat grafting to keep an eye on your progress. Contact your doctor immediately if you have chronic pain, a growing amount of bruising or swelling, fever, odd discharge, or skin changes close to where you get the injection. Even though most side effects go away soon and aren’t very serious, seeking early medical care can help avoid complications.

Is the procedure permanent?

Partially. Though the body may reabsorb some transferred fat (about 30 – 50%), the rest that survives can stay on the body for a long time.

The price
Factors Affecting Pricing
How much does fat transfer cost?

Areas with the highest cost of living tend to have higher prices for fat transfer to the body. These neighbourhoods include Notting Hill and Chelsea, Kensington and Knightsbridge, in addition to Mayfair. Prices may range from £6,900 to £10,900 per session and even higher for premium packages and additional.

On the other hand, fat transfer to the body in those neighbourhoods with lower demands and more competitors may offer a lower price. For some areas, like Shoreditch and Hackney in East London, Clapham and Brixton in South London, Camden and Islington in North London, and Fulham and Hammersmith in West London, prices may range from £3,500 to £6,495 per session, depending on the clinic and package offer.

These are only approximations; to know the exact arm lift cost, consult your doctor.

The essentials

  • Medical history: You might be required to have blood drawn and to visit the doctor in person for a physical exam before the surgery.
  • Do not smoke: If you smoke close to surgery, it slows down your healing and reduces the fat survival, so you should stop at least 2-4 weeks before and after your treatment.
  • Avoid certain medications: avoid taking blood thinners, anti-inflammatory medicines, and some supplements (for example, vitamin E or herbal remedies) because these raise your chance of bleeding.
  • Make arrangements: Prepare for someone to provide transport and stay with you in those first 24 to 48 hours following the operations.
  • Check your fasting guidelines: When having general anaesthesia, you will generally be told to abstain from eating or drinking 6-8 hours prior to the procedure.

Following your doctor’s advice closely helps you heal well and reach the best possible outcomes after a fat transfer treatment. Most likely, you must put on a compression garment over the treated spot, avoid pressing on the affected area and minimise physical activity for a few weeks. Drinking enough water, eating nutritious food and refusing smoking and drinking alcohol are important for your body’s health and speedy recovery. Making all follow-up appointments helps to monitor your progress and handle any issues immediately.

As soon as you heal from a fat transfer, do your best to support your results and encourage the transferred fat cells to continue living in your body. The following explains what you should do:

  • It is important to maintain your weight, so sudden increases or decreases do not affect the final result of your treatment.
  • Focus on eating healthy meals that give you the vitamins and nutrients your body and fat cells need.
  • Exercise regularly, choosing workouts that are not very demanding, as intense exercises might cause you to lose weight very fast.
  • Smoking should be avoided because it reduces blood circulation and affects how fat is metabolised.
  • Review the status of your surgery regularly and get in touch with your surgeon regarding any changes you see.
  • Self-care after recovery will help you keep the changes you want, and your results will stay natural.

Why have a fat transfer to the body?
Dual Body Contouring
Body contouring in two areas

You can get two benefits in one procedure. Undesired fat from the abdomen or thighs is removed, and this fat is then placed in another area to make your body look balanced.

Enhancing Appearance And Confidence
How does fat transfer to the body help women?
  • Restore Shape and Volume

Some people experience a loss of volume in body parts like the buttocks, hips, and breasts, which may be caused by ageing, losing weight, or genetics. A fat grafting procedure allows for gentle, natural changes to the shape of the body.

  • Slims down trouble spots

After having the excess fat taken out from the donor site (abdomen, thighs, or flanks), people can finally reduce the bulky parts of their bodies, which leads to an improved silhouette.

  • Boost confidence and body image

Improving your appearance may often give you a better mood. People may feel better in their clothes, comfortable with their looks, and happier with their lives.

  • Provide a safe and natural alternative

If you wish to avoid implants or other artificial fillers, fat transfer is a good way to go, since it uses just your own natural tissue.

Natural, Lasting Results
Lesser risks and long-lasting results

Rejection is unlikely because the fat comes from your body. After the fat cells are placed, they become a permanent and natural-looking part of your body, which other options, such as fillers or implants, may not be able to do.

Recovery timeline
Days 1 - 3

Both the donor and injection sites can experience pain, swelling, and bruising. Your surgeon may put drainage in the incision site.

  • You need to wear compression garments to aid swelling.
  • Take any prescribed pain medications and antibiotics.
  • Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Keep the incisions clean and dry.
Week 1-2

Pain, swelling, and bruising are still present.

  • Engage in light activities.
  • Avoid putting pressure on the grafted areas.
Weeks 2 - 3

Swelling may now begin to subside.

  • Start with light activities.
  • Desk work may be continued (with surgeon's clearance).
  • Still avoid heavy lifting or exercises.
Weeks 4 - 6

You may now begin to notice the formation of final results. Most swelling may fade away.

  • Continue wearing compression garments.
  • You may now do some light exercises.
6 Weeks to 3 Months

This time, the surviving fats start to settle down. The defined shape and contour of the body become noticeable

  • You may return to your daily routine.
  • Avoid heavy exercises like running or lifting.
  • Maintain a stable wait to continue the results.
3 - 6 Months

The fat cells that survived are now part of your body. The fat transfer results are now permanent.

  • You may now resume full activities.
  • Continue a healthy lifestyle.
  • Attend follow-up checkups for monitoring.
The benefits

  • There are no artificial implants used because it uses your body fat.
  • Feels and looks like the real thing because breasts and buttocks are soft to touch.
  • Promotes better skin appearance because the stem cells present in fat can make skin look healthier.
  • Scars can be hidden easily because the incision size is small.

  • The procedure can both take away fat from the excess areas and add it to places that need more volume.
  • It reframes and realigns, which is perfect for adjusting how your body naturally looks.
  • Results can be long-lasting or permanent.
  • Customisable based on your body’s needs as well as your goals.

  • You are unlikely to get a reaction because fat is from your own body.
  • Compared to more invasive surgeries, fat transfer has minimal downtime.
  • Less invasive than implants.
  • The recovery process is quick.

Factors to consider

You can be a good candidate for fat grafting surgery if you have the following criteria.

  • Have significant fat in places like the abdomen, thighs, flanks, or arms.
  • Wanted to enhance volume in the buttocks, breasts, or arms naturally without the use of synthetic fillers or implants.
  • People who do not smoke or are willing to stop smoking.
  • With realistic expectations and ready to follow aftercare guidelines.

To know if you are a good candidate, consult your healthcare provider today!

The Risks
Can a risk be prevented?

Potential risks

Fat transfer comes with side effects like any cosmetic procedure. It is important that you know all these possibilities.

Manageable or the common ones:

  • Swelling and bruising: normal effects that usually fade away after a few weeks.
  • Numbness: Temporary paralysis in the injected or treated areas, but the feeling should go away after a while.
  • Asymmetry: Outcomes may not be symmetrical, as an individual’s body may heal or react differently.
  • Fat absorption: Not all fat will make it through, which may affect the actual result. In some cases, having a second session is necessary.

Although rare, it is important to know these risks:

  • Infection: It can happen after any surgery. But with good aftercare and a clean environment, infections become very uncommon.
  • Fat embolism: Although very rare, it is extremely dangerous. It happens when fat blocks a blood vessel by entering the bloodstream.
  • Lumps or irregularities: If the texture of the fat feels lumpy or uneven, this is a sign of uneven rendering. Most cases improve after a touch-up.

Choosing an experienced, board-certified professional is crucial to avoid those risks.
