What is a fat transfer to the face?

Rejuvenate And Restore Facial Appearance

Why choose a facial fat transfer?

Using fat in your body is a natural process in returning lost volume, diminishing wrinkles, and renewing your skin to create a youthful appearance that you have been missing. As we get older, fat in important zones of our body becomes lost, and we end up sporting a hollow or tired look. Fat transfer, often referred to as facial fat grafting, is utilised to fill and correct these spots, giving a natural facial appearance.

It also smoothens and enhances the texture and quality of the skin, plus it gives a long-term effect. Moreover, it is a simultaneous twofold process of volume enhancement: in addition to making your face look better, you slim up an area where the donor is taken (usually on the thighs or stomach).

Benefits:

  • Restores youthful volume
  • Smooths finelines and wrinkles
  • Enhance natural contours
  • Improves skin quality

The many types

Micro-fat transfer

Uses small particles of fat to add volume in the areas of cheeks, temples, or jawlines in a way that will define or lift your face.

Nano-fat transfer

Treats fat by making it into a liquid full of stem cells and growth factors that are perfect for repairing fine lines or dark under-eye, though they cannot add volume.

Standard fat grafting

Uses purified fat in its unmodified form with application of both volume provision and mild regenerative effects that are common in full-face rejuvenation.

The procedure
Natural Volume Restoration
How does fat transfer to the body work?

Facial fat transfer is an aesthetic cosmetic procedure in which your doctor takes away any unwanted fat from the donor area (tummy or thighs) and injects it into your face to give it volume, fill in wrinkles, and improve natural contours. The treatment consists of three steps:

  • Fat harvesting: Carefully remove fat from one of your body parts.
  • Fat purification: Separating fluids, oils, and damaged cells, after which only the healthy and high-quality fat remains.
  • Fat injection: The process involves delicately injecting fat into the target areas of your face.

Even though the body naturally reabsorbs the fat, the fat that adheres to the treated area will remain there permanently and provide long-lasting effects.

The Key Steps
What can I expect during the treatment?

Your surgeon will cleanse the area and use local or general anaesthesia to ease your discomfort. The fat from the donor area will be harvested and purified, then injected into the target facial area to regain volume. The majority of the patients go home the same day.

How long is the recovery?

The majority of the patients heal and adopt normal activities between 1 to 2 weeks. Bruising and swelling may be experienced but subside in a few days. The results can be noticed after a few months when the fat gradually settles.

Safety And Comfortability
Is it painful?

You may feel mild discomfort during the fat harvesting and injection. Your doctor will use local or general anaesthesia to make you feel comfortable during the process.

Is it safe?

Facial fat transfer is generally safe, especially if a skilled and certified surgeon performs the procedure. Transplanting your own fat lowers the chance of rejection.

Progressive Beauty Enhancement
Can I combine fat transfer with other procedures?

Yes, you may have other cosmetic treatments like facelifts, eyelid surgery, or skin treatments in order to get the possible outcomes.

Can I have another fat transfer in the same location if I am not satisfied?

Yes. Another treatment is possible after 3 to 6 months in case you need more volume in the target area.

Post-treatment Guidelines To Follow
When should I see a doctor after a facial fat transfer?

Attend all your scheduled follow-up checkups. Contact your physician when you notice an increase in pain, swelling, fever, discharge, or skin reaction.

Is the procedure permanent?

The fat may be reabsorbed between 30% to 50%. The surviving fats may be prolonged over the years.

The price
Factors Affecting Pricing
How much does fat transfer cost?

Areas with the highest cost of living tend to have higher prices for fat transfer to the body. These neighbourhoods include Notting Hill and Chelsea, Kensington and Knightsbridge, in addition to Mayfair. Prices may range from £5,000 to £10,500 per session and even higher for premium packages and additional

On the other hand, fat transfer to the body in those neighbourhoods with lower demands and more competitors may offer a lower price. For some areas, like Shoreditch and Hackney in East London, Clapham and Brixton in South London, Camden and Islington in North London, and Fulham and Hammersmith in West London, prices may range from £1,500 to £7,000 per session, depending on the clinic and package offer.

The essentials

  • Consult a qualified surgeon to check if you are a good candidate. Disclose any medical history.
  • Quit smoking for at least 2-4 weeks prior to the procedure, as it can interfere with healing and fat survival.
  • Stop all aspirins, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil, or other blood-thinning vitamins or supplements 1-2 weeks before because it can increase the chance of bruising.
  • Stay at a stable weight because changes in weight may affect the donor area and the results.
  • Take fluids and balance your diet before the surgery.
  • Wash your skin on the day of the procedure. Avoid applying makeup, lotion, or other skincare products to minimise the risks of infection.
  • Do not take alcohol for at least 24-48 hours to lessen the risks of bleeding and dehydration.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home.
  • Ask for help from your family, relatives, or friends to help you during the recovery period.

It is recommended that you rest and relax, have your head raised, and follow all the post-procedure requirements given by your physician. The first week is normal with swelling and bruising, and this can be alleviated with cold compresses. It is important not to touch or press your face, avoid using makeup for at least 24-48 hours, and apply only mild skincare items. Avoid exercise, alcohol, and smoking for at least two weeks because they may influence the healing process and fat survival. It takes 1-3 months for fat to settle and have better final results. It is supposed to lose some fat, and touch-up may be necessary.

It is recommended that you do not gain or lose weight significantly because it may change the volume in your face. Avoid smoking since it decreases blood circulation, and this may affect the survival of the transferred fat. Apply a sunscreen daily and use gentle skincare products.

Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and limiting alcohol will also be able to maintain your results.

Finally, do not miss any follow-up appointments because they allow your doctor to observe the results and prepare touch-ups if needed.

Common temporary side effects:

  • Swelling and bruising that fades away after 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Little soreness or pain at the donor or injection site.
  • Tightness or numbness in the treated region.
  • Asymmetry in appearance while healing (corrected once swelling subsides)

Possible risks and complications:

  • Fat reabsorption of the transferred fat, touch-ups may be required.
  • Grits or lumps occur when fat does not spread out uniformly.
  • An infection may happen at the injection or donor site.
  • A nodule or cyst may develop if fat has been trapped.
  • Although rare, injury to a blood vessel may happen when fat enters the bloodstream.

Choosing an experienced, board-certified professional is crucial to avoid those risks.
