What is Frenuloplasty?

Penile Frenuloplasty

What does it do?

Frenuloplasty is a straightforward procedure, which will lengthen the frenulum breve or short frenulum, and prevent tearing, allow more movement and ultimately bring less pain for patients. It is fast, safe, and performed under local anaesthetic with minimal recovery time. Unlike circumcision, frenuloplasty focuses on correcting the frenulum without removing the entire foreskin.

The frenulum is a small elastic band of tissue beneath the head of the penis, . It attaches the foreskin to the underside of the glans penis and allows it to move properly. Some men have a short penile frenulum, so the foreskin may feel tight, particularly during sexual intercourse. This can be painful and cause discomfort, and sometimes small tears and bleeding too.

Several benefits include:

  • Decrease in pain or discomfort
  • Foreskin being able to move easily
  • Less Chance of tear or bleeding.
  • A quick and simple recovery
  • Boosts in confidence

The essentials

At your first appointment:

  • Your doctor will inquire about your symptoms.
  • They will evaluate your medical history, which may include conditions such as:
    • Diabetes
    • High blood pressure
    • Asthma or heart, kidney, and thyroid conditions

You will be asked about:

  • Past surgeries or injuries
  • Allergies to anesthesia
  • Current medicine, such as blood thinners, antidepressants, or herbal remedies
  • Physical examination will include an evaluation of the frenulum and tight foreskin.

You may need tests like:

  • Blood and urine tests
  • ECG (electrocardiogram)
  • Chest X-ray

Pre-surgery instructions:

  • Please discontinue blood thinners or similar medications 2–3 weeks preoperatively.
  • Leave off alcohol and smoking for at least 3 weeks.
  • Nothing to eat or drink 6 to 8 hours prior to the procedure (a precaution against problems with the anesthesia).

Right after surgery:

  • Some pain, discomfort, and tenderness is to be expected.
  • Your doctor will provide pain relief medicine to help ease the pain.
  • Some swelling, or light bruising
  • Sensations of the penis are to be expected but not to worry, it generally resolves on its own.
  • When at home, remember to take it easy to allow your body to heal.

  • The dressing typically falls off on its own after 24 hours. If not, you will need to lift it carefully
  • Keep the area clean and dry.
  • Do not swim or take a bath until your doctor says it is safe.
  • Put vaseline on the head of your penis to prevent it from sticking to your underwear.
  • It helps to retract your foreskin gently every day to keep it flexible. Your surgeon will tell you for how long you should do this.
  • Do not engage in sexual activity for at least 6 weeks to give the tissue a chance to heal.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for approximately 4 weeks.

  • You occasionally tear or bleed from sex.
  • You have premature ejaculation, and have tried topical or oral medications, without success.
