What is a Vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplastyl Procedure

How does vaginoplasty help the patients?

Vaginoplasty is a medical and cosmetic procedure which can help repair or construct a vagina. Some individuals undergo this procedure for medical reasons, it might be due to trauma, childbirth, or medical disorder as it can restore the vagina’s function and appearance. Others choose this surgery as part of their gender affirmation.

Benefits:

  • Restores vaginal functions
  • Enhances appearance
  • Treat medical conditions
  • Boost psychological well-being

The many types

Reconstructive Vaginoplasty

These procedures are suitable for those individuals who need vaginal reconstruction due to damage from injury, childbirth, or medical condition.

Cosmetic Vaginoplasty

This is typically done by removing excess skin or tissue, then suturing the vaginal walls together to create a tighter vaginal canal.

Gender-Affirming Vaginoplasty

Performed to transition the assigned male at birth to female.

Methods: Penile Inversion Vaginoplasty: The most popular technique, which creates a vaginal canal using the skin of the scrotal and penis.

Non-penile inversion vaginoplasty: A part of the colon is employed. A technique like sigmoid colon vaginoplasty is used.

The journey
Consultation Preparation Treatment Recovery
1
Consultation

It is preferable to begin with a consultation where expectations regarding the procedure, necessary preparations, and actions to be taken before, during, and after the treatment are established.

2
Preparation

We are now focused on all the preparations that must be made, ensuring everything proceeds smoothly financially, emotionally, and physically before the procedure begins.

3
Treatment

Medical evaluation for vaginoplasty includes a physical exam, hormone therapy assessment (if applicable), and a mental health evaluation. Patients undergo imaging and lab tests such as blood tests, urinalysis, and sometimes pelvic imaging. Preoperative hair removal through electrolysis or laser treatment is often required in the surgical area. Additionally, patients may need to stop smoking and avoid certain medications before surgery to reduce risks. Some surgeons also require bowel preparation to ensure a clear surgical field.

4
Recovery

After vaginoplasty, patients stay 5–7 days in the hospital. Pain is managed with medications, and antibiotics prevent infection. A catheter stays for a week, dilation is required, and full healing takes months with follow-ups.

The procedure
Vaginoplasty At Work
What do I need to know?

Vaginoplasty works by surgically tightening, creating, or rebuilding the vaginal canal, depending on the needs of the patients. It is performed depending on the reasons why they need the surgery. It may be due to trauma, giving birth, medical conditions, gender affirmation, or cosmetic purposes.

What is the difference between vaginoplasty to labiaplasty?

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure to help tighten, repair, or create a vagina while labiaplasty focused on reshaping only the outer vaginal lips in the vaginal part.

The Key Steps
What can I expect during the treatment?

During the day of the operations, your anaesthesiologist will administer general anaesthesia; this will make you fall asleep during the operations and not feel any pain. The surgical site will be prepared and cleansed to avoid risks of infections. The process will depend on what type of surgery you’re undergoing and the doctor’s technique as well. You will be monitored for any problems that may arise during the operations, most especially your vital signs.

Your surgeon will close the incision with stitches and apply wound covering to protect the area. To help the patient when urinating during the recovery period, a catheter may also be used.

After the operations, you will be monitored in the recovery room to make sure everything is good before your doctor allows you to come home.

How long does the process last?

The kind of surgery, methods, and techniques used are some of the things that affect the length of the vaginoplasty process. Usually, it will take 9 hours or more to complete the procedure.

Safety And Comfortability
Is it safe?

When performed by a qualified and well-experienced surgeon, vaginoplasty can be safe. However, because it is done surgically, there are possible risks of side effects and complications such as infection, bleeding, changes in sensation, scarring, pain or discomfort, as well as complications with healing.

Is it hurtful?

Vaginoplasty uses general anaesthesia, making the patients feel no pain during the procedure. It is normal to feel discomfort after the operations, but it can be managed by pain medication prescribed by your surgeon.

Long Term Effects
Does vaginoplasty affect fertility?

Vaginoplasty doesn’t directly affect fertility; the procedure doesn’t invade the reproductive system as it only works outside the vaginal walls.

Are the results permanent?

The results may vary depending on the type of surgery you have. Reconstructive vaginoplasty may be permanent but needs some follow-up procedures or additional surgeries. The tightness of cosmetic vaginoplasty may be decreased over time, maintenance treatment should be done. Although gender-affirming procedures can be permanent, they need regular dilation to maintain their depth, and sometimes additional surgeries may be needed for proper functioning. Consult your doctor to know more about the procedures tailored to your needs.

Aftercare Guidelines
When should I call my doctor after my vaginoplasty?

When should I call my doctor after my vaginoplasty?

It is important to keep the surgical area clean and dry and watch for any symptoms that are not normal after your operation. Visit your doctor if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Swelling that doesn’t subside after several weeks
  • Signs of infection, such as fever or having pus in the incision site.
  • Pain that medications can’t manage
  • Vomiting

It is important to give these symptoms immediate medical attention to avoid severe complications.

When can I engage in sexual activities?

Sexual activities may be resumed once the surgical area is completely healed and if your body is fully ready to take strenuous activities. Usually, the allowable rest approved by the physician is 2 to 3 months.
