What is Sclerotherapy?

Clear Skin

Vein Freedom

What is the purpose of Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy treats twisted and enlarged veins called varicose veins, and smaller veins, also called spider or thread veins. The solution is injected into the blood vessel using a tiny needle. It will scar the vein and cause blood to divert to a healthier vein. The injected vein will fade away within a few weeks of the treatment. Some veins vanish immediately, others  you will be able to see for a few weeks, a month or moretha. The veins treated with this procedure tend to respond very well compared to some of the other treatments. There is no guarantee that by having this injection the veins will go.

Sclerotherapy is used to treat twisted and enlarged veins, referred to as varicose veins, while the milder ones are spider or thread veins. A needle is used to administer the solution straight into the blood vessels. It scars the vein and reroutes blood flow to the surrounding healthy leg veins. The vein injected swiftly fades in the few following weeks. Depending on their scale and location, these veins may vanish much quicker, as some may only be seen for a week, a month, or more. Others may need more than one vein treatment to obtain the best results.

Several benefits include:

  • Remove varicose and thread veins
  • Better looking legs
  • Less pain and discomfort
  • More confident feeling
Chemical Agents Used in Sclerotherapy

Saline

A saline solution is injected into unwanted leg veins. It has been around for many years but has more side effects such as skin problems, staining, and pain.

Foam

Foam is made by mixing air or CO2 with solutions. The foam displaces blood in the vein, making the treatment more effective and easier to use with machines.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a mildest solution for very small veins and capillaries. It is soft, so this usually doesn’t cause redness, bruising or staining after vein treatment.
Another type of method is the use of ultrasound which helps doctors find the right place to put the needle in the vein. They usually use foam with this type of treatment, so they can see the solution in the vein quite accurately.
The Sclerotherapy Procedure

Injection Therapy

How does sclerotherapy work?

After sclerotherapy sessions, you can notice that the legs are much smoother, younger and healthier. Over time, the body gets rid of the treated veins, making the legs smoother and free of weird colours or bumps. Sclerotherapy entirely eliminates pain and heavy feeling on the legs. It is carried out in a way to allow you to return immediately or book another appointment. The treatment takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Visible Results

How long will the result last?

Some people say that the results are permanent; while it removes the varicose and thread veins completely, you can get new ones in the future. Still,  you can get treatments every four to six weeks, and patients can undergo the treatment after 18 months to ensure that the new veins do not grow back.

After sclerotherapy for small varicose or thread veins, people usually notice a change in 3 to 6 weeks. For large veins, it may take 3 to 4 months. Your vascular surgeon may ask to see the patient about one month later to see how things are going and if more sessions are going to be needed. Usually, the patient waits about six weeks before having another treatment.

Pain Management

Is sclerotherapy a painful procedure?

You may feel some pain from the injection that goes into your vein. On the rare occasion that the solution leaks out for whatever reason, it could be associated with some discomfort. Call your doctor immediately if this happens. The discomfort becomes worse where you had the treatment, but it gets better in about a day to three. For some, it might last longer, but everyone is different. You can take acetaminophen for pain. Do not take Ibuprofen because it reduces an intended inflammatory response to the sclerosing agent.

Exploring Thread Veins

What happens if thread veins are not treated?

Thread vein or spider vein treatment is for beautification purposes only. There are no risks or any discomfort associated with them. Removing thread veins does no harm. Threads serve no purpose and may be removed.

Frequency of Sclerotherapy Treatment

Why do I need more than one sclerotherapy session?

Frequency of sclerotherapy differs from each individual, but the best results are usually seen after 2 to 4 sessions. If you only have a few thread veins, you may be completed in just a few sessions. You may, however, require many more sessions if several threads appear, or if they are widely distributed. You can do Sclerotherapy whenever you are ready. SInce it usually takes 30-60 minutes, it may even be done while having lunch. It is an outpatient procedure so the surgeon carries out the procedure at a time that is beneficial for you.

    Sclerotherapy Before & afters
    Sclerotherapy After
    Sclerotherapy Before

Thread veins (or 'Spider veins') arise when small clusters of veins form just beneath the surface of the skin. Similarly, Varicose veins can crop up due to hormone changes, exposure to the sun, and/or injury. You may be eating all the right things, exercising frequently, and getting plenty of rest but unsightly veins can still rear their head.

    Sclerotherapy After
    Sclerotherapy Before

Thread veins in the legs are a common problem that, although harmless, can often cause distress, making sufferers feel self-conscious and wanting to cover up. Warm summer days and swimsuit season can instead quickly become a source of anxiety - particularly when the veins appear on an exposed area of the leg.

    Sclerotherapy Before

Sclerotherapy is a safe, effective and painless procedure which treats the problem in a way which doesn't require any recovery or bed-rest - just a few trips to see us at the Clinic. Best of all, though, a course of Sclerotherapy ensures that when summer rolls around, you'll be just itching to show off your new, beautiful, vein-free legs.

    Who is the ideal candidate?

Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for varicose and spider veins. However, this is not for everyone; your doctor must speak with you about your eligibility during your initial consultation. If you have a blood clot, are nursing a baby, are pregnant, are in discomfort, or have trouble walking, you are therefore ineligible for sclerotherapy. The use of a birth control pill is acceptable.

    What are the risks?

    Can a risk be prevented?

In general, sclerotherapy is safe. There are too few risks associated with it. You may get some itching, and there may be some red spots on the treated area. Most risks escalate into tiredness or clotted blood, but these are minimal factors. Call a doctor immediately if you can’t breathe easily and are having difficulty moving your legs and feet.
