Earlobe Repair In London

With over half a million procedures undertaken, you're in safe hands

For many, ears are a feature that remains somewhat 'out of sight, out of mind'. For others, however, ears can be a particular source of stress, embarrassment or anxiety - whether that has to with genetic or environmental factors.

Common genetic causes for earlobe concerns might include: congenital deformity such as cleft earlobes, keloid scarring from complications with ear piercing, or simply the ageing or drooping of the ear lobes. Environmental concerns, on the other hand, can include anything from use of heavy earrings and use of body modification jewellery (such as ear stretchers) to any kind of damage sustained from trauma/sports injury. The Harley Street Skin Clinic have truly seen them all.

That's exactly why, whatever your earlobe woes, we're sure we can help.

Lesley Says

“Years of wearing heavy earrings can cause severe drooping of the earlobes; this can be very ageing. You might be surprised by how much, actually. Repairing the stretched or distorted tissue on the ears has a big impact on the face as a whole.”

Dr Khan Says

“Earlobe Repair is a very simple procedure that our patients find has a big payoff. When the ears have been stretched beyond a certain point - or even torn - the only way to repair them is with surgical intervention.”

Earlobe Repair Before & Afters

The remarkable difference a Harley Street Skin Clinic treatment can provide

Effectively, Earlobe Repair is the name given to the surgical correction of the lower ear (a.k.a. the lobe). Depending on the needs of the patient, this may involve anything from cutting away excess tissue in order to make the lobes appear smaller or more proportioned, stitching acutely split/stretched earlobes, or simply subscising visible or painful scar tissue.

If you are instead interested in learning more about the correction of the upper ear - such as ear pinning - please feel free to explore our page on Otoplasty to learn more about this procedure.

HEAVY EARRINGS: A common offender for this kind of earlobe damage is repetitive wear of heavy earrings. This is because of sustained stress on a very small area of skin, i.e. the original piercing. This can leave the lobe distorted over time - even when the offending earring has been removed. This, in turn, makes catching or even tearing the remaining skin far more likely.

MODIFICATION JEWELLERY: Similarly, ears that have been damaged from years of using ear stretchers, plugs and gauges can also benefit from Earlobe Repair. Whilst removing the stretchers may help to shrink the enlarged hole left behind, most simply will not return to normal size without intervention. Here, Earlobe Repair is a powerful form of damage reversal.

SPORTS INJURY: It may even be the case that your particular earlobe damage is a result of impact trauma - perhaps from contact sport such as rugby or boxing. This kind of injury can leave behind severe/tender scar tissue that results in insightly bumps or lesions. In these instances, this damaged tissue can be corrected using minor subcision.

Earlobe Repair FAQs

The answer to some of the most common questions you may have

It's only natural to have questions if you are considering pursuing a treatment for the first time, and at Harley Street Skin, it's important to us that you feel confident and comfortable at every stage of your journey. To help you find the answers you need, here are a few of the more common quibbles that we find our clients frequently ask...

The medical name for Earlobe Repair is 'lobuloplasty', and the way that your lobuloplasty will work will depend entirely on the case that you present. Having said this, repairs most commonly will involve these 3 steps:

STEP 1: Practitioners will begin by numbing the ear(s) by injecting a small amount of local anaesthesia.

STEP 2: They will then begin cutting away the damaged tissue, and refashioning the remaining tissue as neatly as possible.

STEP 3: Finally, they will use stitches or sutures to close the incisions made and minimise any unnecessary scarring.

Some more complex repairs may require skin grafting or the subscision of scar tissue using a scalpel. This will, of course, be discussed with you once your practitioner has had opportunity to assess what is necessary to acheive your desired outcome.

There is a large scope for what Earlobe Repair can fix. They can be used for:

Split & Stretched Earlobes For those with visible damage from heavy earrings or modification jewellery. Acute splitting of the earlobes can be caused by an accidental or forceful removal of jewellery. Following this kind of reconstruction, most patients find they can then have their ears repierced and can return to wearing earrings as normal once again.
Congenital Deformity Some patients come to us with birth deformities of the earlobe. This may be a case of simple surgery to repair a slight congenital cleft, or in some cases, require more complicated procedures that may involve skin or cartillage grafting.
Oversized or Ageing Lobes Some patients are conscious of their ears due to proportion. This may be something they have always struggled with, or something which has become an issue later on in life due to age-related drooping or lengthening. In these instances, repairs can be performed as a means of rejuvenation.
Keloid Scarring These are scars which are a result of tissue regrowth after injury- they may be painful and/or unsightly, and unfortunately some people are more prone than others. Earlobe Repairs may sometimes be used to remedy scarring which has developed from unsuccessful of complicated ear piercing.
Repositioning & Correction For protruding lobes or, on rare occaisions, correction of the lobe positioning after undergoing a surgical facelift. These may be performed to correct earlobe height, angle or symmetry.

FINANCE CALCULATOR

As Earlobe Repairs involve the surgical refashioning of the earlobe tissue, corrections and repairs are typically permanent. That being said, they unfortunately cannot do anything to prevent future damage and age-related drooping.

Most Earlobe Repairs will take between 30 and 60 minutes to complete. This is because, on the whole, these procedures simply call for basic reconstruction (i.e. tissue removal and/or surgical stitching or sutures). More complex cases that require the use of skin grafting may however take longer to complete and/or require more than one procedure.

During the recovery stages, it is normal for patients to experience some tenderness, and minor headaches due to the site's location. These are, of course, temporary - however if you have any concerns about your healing timeline, please do not hesitiate to reach out to the clinic for reassurance.

Beyond this, patients should be made aware that there may be some residual scarring following Earlobe Repair. Please rest assured that this will be kept to a minimum as much as humanly possible, and can be reduced through regular massage and the application of topical creams after the initial recovery stages.

You will likely leave your procedure wearing dressing tape to protect the wound and stitching/sutures. This tape should remain in place for 5 to 7 days. You should attempt to keep the area(s) as dry as possible during this time. After 2 weeks you will be able to begin to massage and moisturise the incision site in order to speed up the healing process and minimise lasting scarring.

To be safe, you are advised to wait for around 3 months before re-piercing/wearing earrings in the corrected earlobes. This is due to the amount of time necessary for the scar tissue to gain the strength necessary to support said jewellery.

Patients are typically able to return to non-physical work relatively quickly, and most patients find that 1-2 days bedrest is more than enough.

We do however advise that you refrain from exercising for a minimum of 2 weeks. After this time, you may resume light activities and gradually increase this up to normal by week 6.
