Mole Removal In London

A 'mole removal' is fairly self-explicit, referring to a procedure which endeavours to remove the appearance of moles on the skin. Most moles are simply caused by harmless overgrowth of the pigment cells - known as melanocytes, or melanocytic naevi - and through cosmetic treatments, this pigment can be minimised or removed entirely. Mole removal procedures are extremely common and make light work of eradicating a skin complaint that many feel self-conscious of.

Lesley Says

“Moles can make patients feel very self-conscious. It’s really quick and simple to get them taken care of, though. You can be in and out of the clinic within half an hour.”

Dr Khan Says

“Our concern is always both medical and cosmetic. First we will assess the mole, and then we will determine the best route to a safe, scar-free removal.”

Having lots of moles does, however, indicate a predisposition to skin cancer - known as melanoma. Melanoma develops from mutations in the melanocytes that make up moles, which is why it is important to closely monitor them for changes in your colour, height, size or shape as this can be an indication of melanoma.

It's only natural to have questions if you are considering pursuing a treatment for the first time, and at Harley Street Skin, it's important to us that you feel confident and comfortable at every stage of your journey. To help you find the answers you need, here are a few of the more common quibbles that we find our clients frequently ask...

Mole removals involve either breaking down the discoloured pigment in the skin (using cosmetic lasers or radiofrequency electrodes) or excising the the mole from its core. There are 3 routes to mole removal offered at Harley Street Skin, and these are: cosmetic laser treatment, radio frequency and traditional excision (the scalpel method).

The type of method necessary for removing your mole with depend entirely on the shape, size and variety of mole, however all are practically pain-free, and undertaken using local anaesthetic.

Whilst moles are entirely natural, large numbers (25 or more) indicate susceptibility to melanoma - a malignant cancer best caught early and treated using surgical excision. Removing moles can be both a preventative move on the grounds of health and an easy remedy to a cosmetic concern, with many considering their 'beauty spots' to instead be a source of contrition.

Mole removal procedures offer permanent results. Of course with moles being a complaint relative to pigment, there is always the possibility that they may grow back over time if the moles were not penetrated deep enough. In this instance, you may need to book a second treatment to repeat the process. However, with thousands of removal procedures under our belt, and perfect execution on the top of our priority list, this is not often the case at Harley Street Skin.

Mole removal is a very straightforward procedure, requiring very little time at all. Appointments will typically take half an hour, although the procedure itself can take as little as 10 minutes - depending on the nature of the mole(s) concerned. Radio frequency in particular is known for its rapid recovery time, too, so many find the whole process suitably speedy.

Depending on the removal method, you may experience some redness and soreness for a few days following treatment, and following that, some scabbing and flaking of the skin as a new layer forms over the site. This will, however, have healed entirely by the four week mark.

On the whole, mole removal is relatively pain-free and - provided the site is kept clean as it heals - complications are extremely rare. As the electrodes used during radio frequency treatments are also self-sterilising whilst in use, the risk of post-procedure infection is very low.

Recovery from the mole removal procedure is very straightforward, and many people feel perfectly able to function as normal that very same day once local anaesthesia has waned. The healing process, however, can take anywhere from one to four weeks as the skin regenerates over the wound. During this time, the area will form a protective layer, eventually flaking to reveal a fresh, flat and mole-free layer beneath. The treated area will continue to fade out to blend with your natural skin tone over the following few weeks.

It is usually possible to return to work immediately following a straightforward mole removal, although special considerations should be made if the treated area is more intimate or may be irritated by strenuous duties. A policeman, for instance, may experience physical contact that could irritate the removal site and affect the healing process, however those in office based roles are unlikely to encounter this kind of issue.

Removals from the face, neck and hands should not hinder your return to work, although those on the back, chest, legs, torso or groin may very well require a few days to heal before being thrust back into day-to-day activity.
