The procedure is simple and normally performed under local anaesthetic. In the case of inverted nipples, small incisions are made at the base of the nipple in order to allow access to the milk ducts that are pulling the nipple inwards. Then, depending on the severity of the inversion, the milk ducts are either stretched or cut to pull the nipple forward.
A protruding nipple, on the other hand, is normally treated by trimming the skin and bulk of the nipple to reduce its overall size. Both height and width of the nipple can be diminished while still preserving sensation.

Depending on what you need, nipple correction will either bring forward inverted nipples or reduce the size of those that are overly protruding. Following a consultation and discussion, nipples are reshaped into the desired form, so that you are left with exactly what you had in mind.
Nipple correction is permanent.
It should be noted, however, that factors such as weight gain and pregnancy can alter completed results longer-term.
Nipple surgery can be performed in a multitude of ways depending on the desired result, however most procedures can be completed in between one and two hours.
For women undergoing inverted nipple correction surgery, the milk ducts are normally divided during the procedure which can, on occaision, interfere with the ability to breastfeed. It is recommended that you discuss breastfeeding with your practitioner at your consultation to assess and discuss the risks of this prior to treatment.
During recovery stages, patients may experience bruising or swelling however 'over the counter' pain medication, such as Paracetomal, can be used to manage this. After surgery, some patients do also experience some changes to nipple sensation, however, once healed, most patients find that everything returns to normal relatively quickly.
Nipple correction is a relatively simple procedure and recovery will usually take around a week or so. Your doctor may advise against wearing padded bras or tight-fitting clothes during this time, or for up to two weeks after surgery depending on the specifics of your treatment.
Many patients feel comfortable returning to more sedentary roles after a few days of surgery, however it is advised that you avoid doing anything strenuous for about a week following the procedure. This may mean that roles which are particularly demanding require a little more downtime than others. If you are concerned about this, please feel free to discuss this with your practitioner at consultation as they should be able to give you a more accurate recovery timeline based on your specific case.
