Buccal Fat Removal (buccal being a Latin derivative of bucca meaning “puffed cheek”), is a procedure that helps sculpt and refine the cheeks, gently proportioning the face by adjusting the facial tissues known as the 'buccal fat pads'. Extraction of buccal fat can be performed using a delicate procedure known as Facetite, or in cases that do not require simultanous skin tightening, surgical removal.
Put simply, buccal fat pads are the deposits of local fat which sit on top of the buccinator muscle (the portion of the face between the bottom of the cheekbone and the corner of the mouth). A Buccal Fat Removal enhances the cheeks natural bone structure - that is, the craniofacial architecture.
Most popularly, Buccal Fat Removal is performed using the procedure known as Facetite. This involves using radiofrequency heat to break down excess fatty tissue, and removing this with a fine cannula. This method has the added benefit of encouraging collagen stimulation, leaving the treated skin far more taut and firm. This route has a fantastic ability to both contour and reduce cheek volume at the same time.
Alternatively, Buccal Fat Removal can be performed as an intricate but effective minor surgery. This method involves extracting the fat from the upper-middle portion of the face and mouth by making a small incision inside the mouth, gently separating the buccinator muscle from the buccal fat. The excess cheek fat is then removed and the incisions closed with stitching or sutures. This method is favoured by those who as not as concerned by residual skin laxity, i.e. younger patients with more natural skin elasticity.
A Buccal Fat Removal has several benefits - the first being reduced fat in the cheeks meaning that patients will feel more confident brandishing a newly contoured and more svelte face.
Patients also report finding that removing bulk from the cheeks enhances both the cheekbones and the eyes, restoring excellent definition to the jaw.
Buccal Fat Removal results are permanent and will yield a life-long improvement to the face. It is important to note that, at first, results may be obscured by swelling and it can take up to six months for this to settle entirely. During these 6 months you will notice that inflammation in the cheeks will gradually settle down and form neatly around the underlying facial structures.
The Buccal Fat Removal procedure typically takes up to an hour and a half to complete. Having said this, each case is individual and many patients choose to combine this treatment with other contouring procedures - this will understandably impact the duration of the procedure. Of course, your surgeon will discuss all of this with you before commencing with your particular treatment plan.

Post-treatment, patients may experience some swelling, bruising and mild pain during the recovery stages. Some may also encounter slight injury to salivary ducts or a change in sensation to the treated area.
Side effects can be significantly reduced by strictly abiding by the aftercare information given, as well as making sure to avoid smoking and consuming a healthy diet which includes raw fruits and vegetables, and avoids excessively processed or fatty foods.
Initial recovery will normally take around one week, yet most patients will experience swelling which lasts substantially longer. Patients should expect to see residual swelling for up to one month of their operation. During the recovery period, your surgeon will advise you on how best to eat to successfully aid your healing. This typically involves a soft or liquid food diet for the initial healing stages.
Many patients feel able to return to more sedentary work within just a few days of their procedure. This will, of course, vary from patient to patient and you should allow yourself adequate healing time when returning to more active roles. Your surgeon will be happy to advise you further on this at your consultation.
