SmartXide Laser (a.k.a. the Co2 Laser or SmartXide Dot) is a versatile, fractional laser that is employed to help both rejuvenate and resurface the skin, improving texture and quality. It can be used to help improve the appearance of acne scars, pigmentation and fine lines, whilst also shrinking pores and improving skin laxity.

There are 2 varieties of SmartXide laser offered at Harley Street Skin: the SmartXide and the SmartXide Cool. Both are aimed at resurfacing, but vary in strength and penetration. While SmartXide functions at a much higher temperature and therefore offers a much deeper result, SmartXide Cool boasts a much faster healing process and is perfect for more superficial damage.
The CO2 laser is able to stimulate rejuvenation by targeting small areas of skin using a small wand-like device which is passed over the treatment area. This laser heats the dermis, and stimulates new collagen production - making it excellent for acne scarring and other imperfections such as age spots, pigmentation and wrinkles.
During SmartXide treatment, a high energy laser works to make damage and break down the outer layers of the epidermis, in order for new skin to take its place. The treated skin then begins to flake away as it heals and new skin cells develop, making the face much smoother, firmer and more youthful in appearance.
Although similar, fractional laser treatments work differently from chemical peels in that only portions of the skin are disrupted during the procedure. Chemical peels affect all of the skin down to a certain depth, whereas SmartXide leaves parts of the skin untouched, allowing for deeper penetration and a more dramatic effect on skin quality.

To help you find the answers you need, here are a few of the more common quibbles that we find our clients frequently ask...
SmartXide lasers work by shooting small beams of laser onto the skin at energy levels that do not burn the skin, but transmit energy to the deeper tissues in a fractional pattern. This allows for space in between the dots of treated skin - hence the 'dot' in SmartXide Dot.
The energy delivered to the dermis both strips away the damaged skin and stimulates the cells to multiply while producing collagen. This is what helps repair damage to the skin such as scarring and sun damage.
SmartXide laser treatments are designed to do very specific things such as: decrease pore size, smooth the skin and decrease the appearance of fine lines and areas of hyperpigmentation. It also facilitates mild skin tightening due to the collagen stimulation. As a result, skin looks tighter, younger, smoother and develops a nice, healthy glow.
Results of both SmartXide and SmartXide Cool are permanent, however will diminish with the natural ageing of the skin. For best results, patients are advised to undergo an initial treatment programme of 3-4 treatments spaced two weeks apart, and then come back and see us for maintenance treatments every 4 months or so.
SmartXide laser’s fractional dot technology is quick and precise – allowing us to treat the whole face and neck in about half an hour.
You will require an initial consultation for SmartXide, where often patients are asked to prepare their skin with a specialized set of topical products for a week or two prior to treatment. These products are designed to prepare and strengthen your skin for your laser procedure, significantly minimizing the post procedure downtime and swelling. This preparation period will elongate the process somewhat, but the treatment itself should take no more than 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.
*Please note that on some occasions, patients may also require a prescription of medications in preparation for both SmartXide and SmartXide Cool.
SmartXide laser will result in some redness - similar to minor sunburn - and some accompanying swelling. This is mild however, and typically takes between 3 and 14 days to subside, depending on skin sensitivity. SmartXide Cool on the other hand will not result in any lingering redness, however mild swelling is still probable.
There is no downtime with the Smart-Xide procedures, however, people with very sensitive skin may see some mild flushing of the skin. This redness can be concealed easily with makeup, and will settle down within 3-10 days of treatment. Some residual redness may be present for up to 14 days. SmartXide Cool, however, will not result in any notable redness and patients generally jump straight back into their normal activities.
Some patients do choose to take a few days from work following SmartXide treatments, purely to let the redness from treatment subside. This is, however, by no means compulsory and patients are capable of returning to normality straightaway.
