Thigh Lifts can be performed under local or general anaesthetic, depending on the amount of skin that is to be removed. First, an incision is made along the inner groin crease. Then, skin is lifted down to the muscle layer and the excess removed. The remaining tissue is then restitched with several layers of specialised stitching.
A Thigh Lift is the ideal procedure for removing skin that is sagging, loose, uncomfortable and embarrassing. Many patients find that severe skin sagging of the thigh can cause relentless chafing, unsightly bulging or pinching - as well as added pressure to the knees and calves. Thigh lifts can alleviate all of the above, and instead leave the area slimmer and firmer.
The outcome of this lift is not just physical, either, with many patients coming away from treatment with a huge confidence boost after suffering many years of anxiety and insecurity.
The effects of a Thigh Lift are permanent. The treatment won’t be able to prevent future natural sagging of the skin - although best results can be maintained through a healthy lifestyle.
The procedure itself generally takes around two hours to complete, but the duration can depend on the individual and the amount of fat and skin there is to remove. Following an initial consultation with a doctor, you will have a clearer idea of how long your thigh lift will take.
Due to the substantial amount of skin being removed, scarring is an inevitable side effect of this procedure. Whilst the incisions made are as inconspicuous as possible, the inner thigh will maintain some level of visible scarring longer term. These scars will improve dramatically over time and patients often find them a worthwhile exchange for the more toned, svelte legs they are left with.
On very rare occasions, there is also a potential risk of bleeding and infection. In these uncommon scenarios, further surgery may be necessary.
Following a Thigh Lift, we recommend that patients take at least 3-5 days to rest as much as possible. Patients are advised to take some time away from work - typically between 2 and 3 weeks from work - as bruising and swelling can take around ten days to subside. You can then begin to reintroduce exercise after 3-4 weeks of treatment. Once incisions have begun to heal, it is advised that patients wear a compression garment (similar to tight bicycle shorts) to encourage the skin to heal in position.
Most people will return to work after 2-3 weeks of surgery. Jobs that are more physically demanding may require a longer break from work but doctors will be happy to advise you more specifically in terms of comfortably returning to work.
