What is cortisol testing?

Hormone Assessment

How does cortisol testing work?

A cortisol test measures the level of cortisol in your body.

Cortisol is made by your adrenal glands, which is located just above your kidneys. Depending on what your doctor is checking, cortisol can be measured using a blood, saliva or urine sample. In private clinics, a blood test is often the first choice because it provides a clear picture of the amount of your cortisol at a specific time of the day.

Several benefits include:

  • Finds hormone imbalances
  • Helps explain ongoing symptoms
  • Helps give accurate diagnosis
  • Guides the right treatment
  • Monitors existing adrenal conditions
  • Gives peace of mind

Why do you need a cortisol test?

Your clinician may request for cortisol testing if you have been experiencing symptoms that do not have an obvious cause.

Some of the common reasons include:

  • Ongoing tiredness
  • Difficulty coping with stress
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Muscle weakness
  • Low blood pressure
  • High blood pressure
  • Mood changes
  • Poor sleep
  • Blood sugar changes

Your clinician will look at your symptoms, medical history, medications and overall health before deciding whether cortisol is right for you.

The procedure
Step By Step Procedure
How is it done?
  • You will be asked to sit comfortably while your clinician cleans the skin on your arm.
  • A tourniquet is placed around your arm to make the vein easier to find.
  • A small needle is inserted into a vein to collect a blood sample.
  • Once enough blood has been taken, the needle is removed.
  • Apply gentle pressure on the injection site with a gauze.
  • A small plaster is placed over the site to help prevent bruising.
Waiting For The Result
How long do I wait to get the results?

Most private clinics return results within 1 to 5 working days. Some London clinics offer next day results for standard cortisol blood tests.

Fasting Requirement
Do I need to fast before the test?

No need to fast for cortisol testing. But it depends whether it is being carried out alongside other tests that need fasting.

Morning Cortisol Testing
What time of the day should a cortisol test be done?

Many clinicians prefer to take blood samples between 8am to 9am to provide the most useful baseline result when assessing adrenal function.
