The Dos & Don’ts of Taking Wegovy for New Users

The Dos & Don’ts of Taking Wegovy for New Users

Introduction to Wegovy

If you’re new to Wegovy or your healthcare provider just recently prescribed it, you might be wondering how you can take it properly. At first, you can feel intimidated with your new injectable medication, but once you have known the process, it will become easy for you as if it was just a part of your normal routine.

Wegovy is a prescription medication to be used on a weekly basis. It contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist to help regulate your appetite and blood sugar. This medication is widely used to help overweight people or those living with obesity lose their weight. It should be taken together with healthy diet and lifestyle changes to get the best healthy outcomes

In the UK, you can get Wegovy from private clinics or through the NHS for some specific cases as long as you meet the required criteria. How you received it doesn’t matter, what is really important is that you know the proper way on how to store, and inject the medication. These will help ensure that it works safely and effectively.

Summary:

  • Take your Wegovy injection weekly on the same day if you can.
  • Store the pen in the fridge (2–8 °C) or at room temperature (max 30 °C) for up to 28 days only.
  • Rotate your injection sites so you will not experience irritation or lumps.
  • Make sure that you received the entire dose by following the full injection process.
  • Dispose of your used needles using a sharps container.
  • In any case that you missed your dose, avoid double dosing.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this article, you’ll able to learn:

  • How you can safely store your Wegovy pen and prepare for your injections.
  • How to appropriately choose and rotate your injection sites.
  • How to execute the full dose of your injection correctly.
  • How you can handle your missed dose the right way.
  • How you can avoid mistakes and how you can manage your side effects.

Step 1 – Understanding Your Dosage

If you are new to Wegovy medication, you will usually start with a gradual increase in dosage instead of beginning with a high dose right away. Then, it will slowly increase over time. This process will help your body adjust to the medication, and prevent you from experiencing side effects, like nausea.

This is how your treatment schedule will look like:

Treatment Week Weekly Dose
Weeks 1–4 0.25 mg
Weeks 5–8 0.5 mg
Weeks 9–12 1 mg
Weeks 13–16 1.7 mg
Maintenance 2.4 mg

These schedules can be adjusted by your doctor, depending on how your body will react to them.

Step 2 – Best Time to Take Wegovy

Many people who are new with wegovy are asking “what is the best time to take Wegovy?” Honestly, there’s no best time. You don’t need to take your wegovy at the exact time every week. What really matters is that you take it consistently.

You can take it any time of the day:

  • Morning
  • Night
  • Afternoon

It can be of big help if you choose a day and time that you’ll not forget. You can combine it with your other routine.

For example:

  • Your laundry day.
  • Monday mornings with other medications.
  • Before taking out your rubbish.

You can also set your phone alarm or calendar schedule to help remind you with your injection.

Preparing for Your Injection

This is a simple but important step to take before you inject your Wegovy.

Storage Guidelines

You need to store your Wegovy in the refrigerator at 2–8 °C. Avoid placing it in the freezer or anywhere that catches direct sunlight. You can also keep it at room temperature (up to 30 °C) for 287 days.

Inspect The Pen

Before you inject your medication, make sure that you have inspected it.

  • Check the expiry date
  • The liquid inside should be clear and odourless
  • The pen has no damage

If you see any particles on the solution, or it looks cloudy, do not use it.

Clean Your Hands

Before handling your pen, make sure your hands are clean. This will avoid the risk of infection.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Dry them thoroughly.
  • Prepare your pen, needle, alcohol swabs, and sharps container.

Where to Inject Wegovy

Wegovy is a subcutaneous injection. Meaning, you’ll be injecting it under your skin.

Common locations are:

  • Abdomen: Inject in the lower part of your stomach, 2” away from your belly button.
  • Upper thigh: You can inject conveniently on the front of your thigh.
  • Upper arm: Also, you can use the back of your upper arm. But, you need an assistant or a mirror to be able to inject properly.

Make sure that you rotate your injection site weekly to prevent skin irritation or the formation of fatty lumps under your skin.

Example rotation:

  • Week 1: left abdomen
  • Week 2: right abdomen
  • Week 3: left thigh
  • Week 4: right thigh

Avoid injecting into these areas:

  • Bruised
  • Tender
  • Scarred
  • Red or Inflamed
  • Hard or swollen

Rotating your injection site and avoiding those damaged areas will help improve the absorption of your medication.

Dos and Don’ts Before Injection
Dos
  • Clean the area of your injection using an alcohol swab.
  • Wait until the alcohol dries completely before you start injecting.
  • Rotate your injection sites weekly to avoid irritations.
  • Every injection, always use a new needle.
Don’ts
  • Do not inject through your clothing.
  • Do not reuse your needles.
  • Do not inject into your irritated or damaged skin.
  • Do not skip the steps for preparation.

How to Inject Wegovy – Step-by-Step Guide

On your injection day, once you have already prepared everything, follow these steps carefully on how you can properly inject your Wegovy.

  • Remove the cap of your pen and check the status of the semaglutide inside. It should be clear and not have any particles around.
  • Remove the protective tab of the needle and twist it securely onto your pen. Remove the needle’s outer and inner caps.
  • On the first use of your pen, you need to perform a flow check to know if the liquid inside flows properly. There should be a small drop that will appear at the middle of the tip.
  • Gently pinch your skin and insert the needle at a 90-degree angle.
  • Deliver the dose by pressing the button of your injection firmly. You’ll be hearing two clicks.
    • First clicks–it’s a sign that your injection has started.
    • Second click–it means that your dose is almost complete.
  • Make sure to wait for about 6–10 seconds before you remove the needle., to ensure that you fully deliver your dose. If you see a small drop of blood, press it with a cotton swab or tissue. Do not rub the area.
  • Dispose of your used needles properly using a sharps container. Don’t ever throw it in your general waste.

What to Do After Injection

After you are done administering your dose, do the following:

  • Replace the cap of your pen.
  • Store your pen based on the instructions.
  • Safely dispose of your used needle.]

Monitor your condition after receiving your dose, side effects may occur. This may include:

  • Mild nausea
  • Reduced appetite
  • Bloating
  • Tiredness

These symptoms may eventually improve after a few days or once your body has adjusted to the medication. But in case you experience these for more than 6 weeks, consult your doctor right away.

Common Mistakes that You Need to Avoid

If you are a new user of wegovy, you may experience some small errors that can affect your treatment.

  • Removing your pen too soon: It may not deliver your dose completely. Always wait for a few seconds before pulling your pen.
  • Reusing needles: If you do this, there’s a big chance that you experience the risks of infection and that it may damage your pen. Always use a new needle for every injection.
  • Not rotating your injection sites: Your skin can be prone to irritation and lumps might form. Absorption will not improve as well.
  • Improper storage: If your pen is not properly stored, it may lose its effectiveness. Avoid placing them into:
    • Freezer
    • Hot environments
    • Direct sunlight

Missing a Dose

If you forget to take your Wegovy on your scheduled day, you can still take it but depending on how much time has passed. If you missed the dose less than 5 days, you can still take it right away, then take your dose on your regular schedule day. But, if more than 5 days have passed, skip your dose. Just continue your next scheduled day.

Avoid double dosing just to make-up for your missed dose.

Final Thoughts

If you are just starting your Wegovy journey, you may feel overwhelmed. But eventually, you will find the process much easier once you already established your weekly routine. It will become easier for you to inject your medication for just a few minutes.

The most important thing that you need to remember:

  • Keep your schedule consistently
  • Store your pen properly
  • Rotate your injection sites
  • Follow the injection guidelines

You may also experience some side effects during the first few weeks of your medications or every time you’re increasing your dose. But that’s completely normal. It will improve after a few weeks or when your body has adjusted to the medications.

If you ever feel unsure about doing your injections, or you are experiencing those side effects for a long period, don’t hesitate to speak with your physician.
