There are various methods of Rhinoplasty - some of which can be conducted from within the nostril, and some requiring a small incision to be made in the Columella (the delicate strip of skin between the nostrils). These are typically referred to as 'Closed' and 'Open' surgeries: 'Open' referring to anything requiring external incisions, and 'Closed' to what can be achieved without. Regardless of method, however, Rhinoplasty is always carried out under general anaesthetic.
Typically, procedures will consist of removing nose cartilage from within, shaving down bone or cartilage which is causing any abnormality in shape or size, or merely restructuring the existing cartilage.
Often, what you are trying to correct will dictate which approach is taken, although surgeons will be sure to discuss all of your options with you at your consultation.
Rhinoplasties are entirely bespoke and can do anything from correcting nasal asymmetry and resizing the nostrils, to general resculpting and altering the angle between the nose and the top lip. Essentially, if you have a concern about the look of your nose, Rhinoplasty will be able to improve upon them.

Typically, Rhinoplasty procedures take between 1 and 3 hours to carry out. This is dependant on the extent of intervention required. For example, procedures carried out to broaden or lengthen the nose may require grafting cartilage from another inconspicuous area of the body - such as the septum or the ear. This type of procedure can take significantly longer than a minor correction such as smoothing a mild hump in the bridge of the nose.
This will, again, depend on the nature of your nose job.
Less invasive nose jobs will result in some mild swelling, bruising and tenderness, and more drastic operations - such as those which require breaking the nasal bone - will likely lead to significant swelling, tenderness and bruising which may extend to the eye socket and cheeks, as well as the nose itself. This is a perfectly normal response due to the vascular network of the face - although it can mean that the entire face will remain delicate throughout your recovery.
After a nose job, patients are asked to wear a facial splint for the first week or so. This gives the nose the opportunity to set without fear of knocks or bumps in its most delicate stage.
Most patients will experience a feeling of intense congestion - similar to a heavy cold - over the course of the first 7-10 days, although any pain can be easily managed with analgesics if necessary. Bruising should fade within 2 weeks of surgery, and any internal scabbing will fall away within an additional 2 - leaving you with your brand new, perfectly crafted nose.
*It should be noted that it can take between 4 and 6 months to see the complete results of your Rhinoplasty, as minor residual swelling may linger beyond your 4 week recovery window.
Patients generally feel comfortable returning to light duties between 1-2 weeks of surgery. This will vary depending on the nature of your role, as well as the particulars of your surgery. If you are at all concerned about this, do discuss this further with your doctor during your consultation. Together, you will be able to walk through a more accurate timeline of recovery.
